The role is responsible for preparing unique laboratory specimens, recording results in the computer, and managing accessioning and ordering. Additionally, the technician handles the transport of hazardous flammable waste and manages correspondence for the Medical Review Officer.
Summary: Responsible for all assigned duties of the assigned specimen prep areas related to the preparation of specimens. Ability to read, writes, and performs basic arithmetic and has a basic knowledge of the sciences as normally acquired through high school graduation or the equivalent. Under the direct supervision of the Manager responsible for the assigned shift as scheduled. Incumbents are subject to overtime and call back by the department as designated by the hospital. ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: Performs assigned unique specimen preparations for lab studies. Records, enter into the computer and files results of lab studies under the direct supervision of the manager. Performs special accessioning and ordering in assigned area. Reviews chain of custody forms and is able to identify correctable and/or fatal flaws. Prepares letters, including those for the Medical Review Officer and is responsible for mailing letters to the client/physician. Performs ordering and registration of specimens. Prepares various unique aliquots of specimens for lab testing. Evaluates sample adequacy for appropriateness. Schedules preparation of samples in order to meet turn-around-times. Pour-over and transport hazardous flammable waste to the hazardous waste drum collection area on the lab dock as needed. Contributes to the positive work climate and overall team effort of the department. Performs related responsibilities as required or directed.
