The Mental Health Technician provides direct care and management for patients with medical and behavioral issues. They also facilitate unit programming, leisure activities, and activities of daily living to support patient growth and development.
The Mental Health Technician will assist in the direct care and management of patients across all age ranges with medical and behavioral issues as directed by the treatment team. The Mental Health Technician will also assist with unit programming to facilitate the carryover of therapy issues, leisure activities, and activities of daily living within the functional ability of patients and with consideration for the patient’s level of growth & development. Knowledge and Skills: Displays an understanding of the basic concepts of safe, supportive, nurturing, & therapeutic human interactions. Demonstrates understanding of program & philosophy & is able to interpret & implement patient care. Displays an active interest in learning. Demonstrates creativity & problem solving skills. Demonstrates leadership by training new employees. Effectively interacts with patients, peers, & families. Demonstrates ability to follow behavior program. Actively supervises therapeutic & recreational activities. Understands & practices effective motivational techniques. Demonstrates consistent ability to problem-solve & communicate clearly, both verbally & in writing. Demonstrates regular, required attendance.
Education/Training: High School diploma or equivalent or combination of education/experience. Prefer bachelor’s degree or college courses in health care, mental health, recreational therapy, education, or human growth & development.
A high school diploma is required, while a bachelor's degree in a healthcare or mental health field is preferred. Candidates should have one year of experience as a nurse's or mental health aide and hold current CPR and CPI certifications.
