About the role

The clinician performs psychiatric consults to assess and diagnose mental health and substance use disorders while maintaining a safe environment for crisis stabilization. They coordinate care and disposition planning by collaborating with medical providers, families, and community resources to ensure continuity of care.

Inova Fairfax Hospital Central Access is looking for a dedicated Psych Emergency Clinician 1 to join the team. This role will be Full-Time, Day shift position with the following schedule options: Sunday through Thursday, 11:00 am–7:30 pm or Tuesday through Saturday, 11:00 am– 7:30 pm

  • The Psych Emergency Clinician 1 uses an integrated approach toward patient outcomes and maintains therapeutic milieu to provide safe environment for crisis stabilization.
  • Provides psychiatric consults to assess and diagnose mental health and/or substance use disorders as well as providing risk assessments.
  • Integrates assessments using information to develop a recommendation for care.
  • Provides care coordination to ensure the patient and family receive and are referred to appropriate resources to optimize treatment outcomes.
  • Provides care coordination within the Emergency Department by collaborating with patients, families, medical providers, community partners, and behavioral health resources.
  • Facilitates appropriate disposition planning, transitions of care, and timely access to treatment services.
  • Ensures patients and families receive appropriate referrals and resources to support continuity of care and optimize treatment outcomes.
  • Duties will be performed under the clinical supervision of an approved clinical supervisor.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Care Coordination
  • Meet with patients who have complex placement or discharge needs.
  • Answer questions regarding placement and establish appropriate expectations with patients and families.
  • Provide behavioral health resources and referrals.
  • Meet with patients and families experiencing an extended length of stay.
  • Attend Difficult-to-Place meetings as needed.
  • Provide aftercare follow-up for complex cases within three to five business days.
  • Assist with high-risk discharge planning and coordination.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Certification - Basic Life Support within 3 Months, Crisis Prevention Institute in-person training for non violent crisis intervention, receive CPI blue card within 6 months of hire. After 9/1/25, Vistelar replaces CPI for new and renewed de-escalation certifications.
  • Licensure – Within Two Years Licensed Mental Health Specialist, Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC), Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT), Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW), Licensed Clinical Psychologist (LCP), or Licensed Substance Abuse Professional (LSATP).
  • Experience - 2 years experience working in the psychiatric or mental health field with the seriously mentally ill.
  • Education - Master's Degree, Ph.D., PsyD, EdD in Mental Health, Social Work, Counseling, Substance Use Disorders or Behavioral Health-related field.

  • At least one year of experience working with individuals with neurodevelopmental disorders and/or neurodivergent populations.
  • Demonstrated interest in developing additional knowledge and skills in this area of focus.

Requirements

Candidates must have a Master's or doctoral degree in a behavioral health field and 2 years of experience with seriously mentally ill populations. Required certifications include BLS and CPI, with a professional license (e.g., LPC, LCSW, LMFT) required within two years of hire.
