Position Summary

The Medical Laboratory Technologist is responsible for performing moderate and high-complexity laboratory testing in accordance with established laboratory procedures and all applicable regulatory requirements. Working under the direction of the Laboratory Manager, this position performs testing across multiple laboratory disciplines while ensuring the accuracy, integrity, and timely reporting of patient results. The Medical Laboratory Technician/Technologist is expected to maintain competency, support quality initiatives, and contribute to the efficient operation of the laboratory.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Laboratory Testing Perform moderate and high-complexity laboratory testing in accordance with established Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), CLIA regulations, and applicable accreditation standards.
  • Perform testing in one or more laboratory disciplines, including Molecular Diagnostics (PCR), Microbiology, Immunology, Chemistry, Hematology, and Culture.
  • Review, verify, and accurately report patient test results within established turnaround times.
  • Recognize abnormal or unexpected findings and follow established procedures for repeat testing, verification, and notification.
  • Quality Assurance and Regulatory Compliance Perform and document quality control procedures as required.
  • Maintain compliance with CLIA, OSHA, HIPAA, laboratory safety policies, and all applicable federal, state, and local regulations.
  • Follow established quality assurance programs and assist with corrective actions when quality standards are not met.
  • Maintain complete and accurate laboratory documentation.
  • Participate in laboratory inspections, proficiency testing, audits, and accreditation activities as assigned.
  • Instrumentation and Technical Responsibilities Operate laboratory instrumentation according to manufacturer specifications and laboratory procedures.
  • Perform routine maintenance, calibration, quality control, and basic troubleshooting of laboratory equipment.
  • Promptly notify supervisory personnel of equipment malfunctions or testing issues.
  • Maintain competency on all assigned instrumentation and testing methodologies.
  • Laboratory Operations Support workflow across multiple laboratory departments as assigned.
  • Follow contamination prevention procedures and maintain proper specimen handling practices.
  • Maintain laboratory cleanliness and organization in accordance with established safety procedures.
  • Assist with inventory management, reagent preparation, and supply monitoring as assigned.
  • Participate in the implementation of new procedures, instrumentation, and process improvements.
  • Professional Responsibilities Maintain competency through continuing education and ongoing training.
  • Demonstrate professionalism and effective communication with laboratory personnel and other healthcare professionals.
  • Maintain patient confidentiality in accordance with HIPAA and organizational policies.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by laboratory management.

Requirements

Minimum Qualifications

Education Associate degree in Medical Laboratory Science, Clinical Laboratory Science, Biology, or a related scientific discipline required.

Certification Current MLT (ASCP), MLS (ASCP), or equivalent certification preferred.

  • Experience One (1) year of clinical laboratory experience preferred.
  • Experience performing moderate and high-complexity laboratory testing.
  • Working knowledge of CLIA regulations, laboratory quality systems, and laboratory safety practices.
  • Preferred experience includes: High-volume or high-throughput clinical laboratory environments.
  • Molecular Diagnostics (PCR), Microbiology, Immunology, Chemistry, Hematology, and Culture.
  • Automated laboratory instrumentation including QuantStudio, KingFisher Flex, GeneXpert, BD Phoenix/AP, or equivalent platforms.
  • Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Knowledge of clinical laboratory principles and testing methodologies.
  • Ability to perform laboratory testing accurately and efficiently while maintaining quality standards.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to prioritize workload in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong attention to detail and documentation practices.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a multidisciplinary laboratory team.
  • Physical Requirements Ability to stand and walk for extended periods during the workday.
  • Ability to lift, carry, and move up to 25 pounds.
  • Manual dexterity sufficient to operate laboratory equipment and perform repetitive laboratory procedures.
  • Ability to distinguish colors as necessary for laboratory testing.
  • Ability to wear required personal protective equipment (PPE) and safely handle biological specimens and hazardous materials in accordance with established safety protocols.
