The Technical Assistant performs laboratory testing procedures, including specimen data entry, slide labeling, and assisting in various biopsy and surgical procedures. They are also responsible for maintaining procedure manuals, documenting quality control, and managing the filing of pathology records.
Located at Atrium Medical Center's Histology Department (Middletown, OH) Full-time Day Shift (7:00 AM-3:30 PM)
Perform testing procedures and protocols in area of responsibility. Position requires the consistent exercising of independent judgment, discretion and interpretation of a continual variety of test variables and results.
Performs accurate specimen data entry into the laboratory information system. Labels specimens and slides accurately. Communicates specimen issues to management when necessary. Prepare Frozen Sections (cutting and staining). Complete Bone Marrow procedures (Atrium only). Assist in Thyroid FNA procedures and stain for adequacy. Assist in CT FNA procedures (usually lung) and stain for adequacy. Assist in EBUS and Navigational procedures in Surgery/Endoscopy and stain for adequacy. Prepare specimens for packing list to Histology/Cytology. Prepare specimens send outs for special testing as needed. File slides and blocks (Atrium, UVMC). Schedule autopsies to relevant locations. Complete monthly cleaning and changing of stain line and cryostats. Document instrument QC as needed. Document temperatures Monday-Friday (Room and Cryostat). Maintain and update procedure manuals for Surg Path, Cytology, and Histology. Send out outside consults for the pathologists. Send out slides to requesting facilities. Filing of all Surg Path, Histo, and Cyto paperwork and orders. Keep track of all HEAL remains and schedule cremations (Atrium Only). Keep track of pathology "on-call" schedule through Qgenda for lab. Pull and preserve pathology legal cases (Atrium,UVMC). Contribute to the overall effectiveness of the department and organization by performing other duties as assigned.
High school diploma or equivalent. Laboratory experience preferred. Keyboarding skills and Medical Terminology helpful. Physical & Safety Demands: Excellent manual/visual coordination. Possible exposure to chemical and biological hazards. Sound reasoning and judgment skills. Positive interactions with internal/external clients. Excellent communication skills and ability to work in a team environment. Will have exposure to biohazard substances and hazardous chemicals. Be familiar with and adhere to safety, ergonomic and health policies of the Company. Comply with all PPE requirements when in the laboratory or other biohazard areas. Complete required safety training and health evaluations in a timely manner. Anticipate safety hazards, act upon unsafe situations and promote safety awareness.
