About the role

The Pharmacy Technician assists in the preparation, dispensing, and delivery of medications to various patient care units and departments. They are also responsible for maintaining accurate records, auditing narcotic transactions, and performing unit inspections to ensure compliance with pharmacy policies.

Summary Under the direction of a Pharmacist or Pharmacy Manager, the Pharmacy Technician 1 assists to prepare, dispense and deliver all medications to patient care units, physician offices and clinics.

Education High school or equivalent required.

Certified as Technician through an accredited program, is preferred.

Certification, Registration & Licensure Must be registered in the state of NH.

In addition, either registered in NH as a Pharmacy Intern or completion of CPhT Certification within two years of hire, with adequate evidence of progress towards certification.

Responsibilities

Fills, updates, and delivers patient medications for first issues and medication cassettes. Labels premixed IV Solutions. Brings back medications from the nursing units that are no longer needed giving particular attention to refrigerated drugs. Checks for outdated items and follows up with pharmacy buyer. Fills floor Stock for patient care units, offices, and ancillary departments. Delivers and returns narcotics to or from patient care areas. Triages phone calls, and refers appropriate questions to the pharmacist. Packages and labels medications using various systems. Maintains all records and adheres to established policies and procedures for controlled substances as per department policy. Performs duties of pharmacy delivery personnel. Refills code carts and medication kits. Completes monthly unit inspections. Performs other projects or duties as assigned. Informs pharmacy buyer of any items to be ordered as well as any associated circumstances. Prepares for pharmacist review, all oral liquids into single dose containers adhering to labeling and record keeping standards including recording of lot numbers and accurate calculation of expiration dates. Prepares IV Solutions using appropriate techniques and follows regulatory guidelines, and provides appropriate accountability for verification by a pharmacist. Responds to all inquiries at the pharmacy window. Helps train and advise new employees and students. Submit reports to PDMP. Reconcile Narcotic transactions in all patient care areas. Audit transactions for bulk medications and reconcile charges for any unused doses. Audit IV preparations sent from pharmacy to total charges and reconcile as appropriate. The employee is frequently required to bend, do repetitive motion, and sit. The employee is occasionally required to climb, kneel, and squat. Specific vision abilities required by this job include color vision, depth perception, far vision, near vision, and peripheral vision. The employee is frequently exposed to moving mechanical parts and non-weather related heat or cold. The employee is occasionally exposed to airborne contaminants, chemotherapeutic agents, electric hazards, slippery surfaces, toxic or caustic chemicals, vibration and variable weather conditions. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.

Requirements

A high school diploma or equivalent is required, with preference given to those certified through an accredited program. Candidates must be registered in the state of New Hampshire and either hold a Pharmacy Intern registration or commit to obtaining CPhT certification within two years.
