The Phlebotomist II is responsible for training and performing the functions of drawing venous and micro blood specimens from in-patients and out-patients, transporting specimens and tests to the laboratory.

Responsible for performing standard laboratory venipuncture procedures for assigned patients.

A Brief Overview The Phlebotomist II is responsible for training and performing the functions of drawing venous and micro blood specimens from in-patients and out-patients, transporting specimens and tests to the laboratory. Responsible for performing standard laboratory venipuncture procedures for assigned patients. Models appropriate behavior as exemplified in MLH Mission, Vision and Values.

What you will do Trains new hires, students and other associates on all the collection procedures.

Demonstrates accuracy and precision in performing procedures.

Performs, within acceptable limits, the standard venipuncture procedures in the laboratory.

Demonstrates conscientiousness about materials and care of equipment.

Maintains organization, accuracy, and precision in stressful circumstances.

Ensures that patient care or department related communications are coordinated among all lab associates.

Performs other job functions as assigned or requested.

Education/Formal Training Requirements Required - High School Diploma or Equivalent Preferred - Technical Degree or Diploma Phlebotomy

Work Experience Requirements Required - Phlebotomy 0-1 years Preferred - Healthcare environment

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Possesses sufficient knowledge, training, and experience to be capable of successfully performing venipuncture without requiring support and instruction from others. Proficient in use of basic office equipment and computers; multi-line phones; and data entry. High level of attention to detail and accuracy. Demonstrates problem solving and decision making skills. Demonstrates superior customer service and communication skills. Ability to perform basic arithmetic calculations. Ability to read and follow written instructions. Ability to organize tasks and maintain control of work flow. Ability to train and educate by setting the example, giving instruction, providing leadership, and generally raising the level of performance of others while on the job. Ability to work as part of a team and alone, with minimum supervision. Ability to remain focused and productive in stressful situations. Ability to deal effectively and diplomatically with frustrated patients, families, staff, and providers.

Supervision Provided by this Position Provides leadership and guidance and acts as resource for less experienced Associates.

  • Physical Demands The physical activities of this position may include climbing, pushing, standing, hearing, walking, reaching, grasping, kneeling, stooping, and repetitive motion.
  • Must have good balance and coordination.
  • The physical requirements of this position are: medium work - exerting up to 50 lbs. of force occasionally and/or up to 25 lbs. of force frequently.
  • The Associate is required to have close visual acuity including color, depth perception, and field of vision to perform an activity, such as assessing patients, preparing and analyzing data and figures; transcribing; viewing a computer terminal; or extensive reading.
  • Frequent invasive and non-invasive patient contact.
  • Exposure to patient body fluids as well as exposure to hazardous or poisonous materials.
  • Ability to react quickly to emergency situations.

Requirements

Candidates must have a high school diploma or equivalent, with a technical degree preferred. The position requires 0-1 years of phlebotomy experience and the ability to perform venipuncture procedures independently.
