About the role

The Speech-Language Pathologist provides speech therapy evaluations and treatments to inpatients and outpatients to restore functional status. They also collaborate with interdisciplinary teams and participate in performance improvement and departmental development activities.

Description PURPOSE STATEMENT

Speech-Language Pathologists assume responsibility and accountability for a designated group of inpatients and outpatients. Speech-Language Pathologists provide speech therapy evaluations, modalities, and treatments in accordance with the Missouri practice act and established hospital and departmental policies and procedures to promote or restore the patients’ highest functional status while providing quality patient care.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS Provide speech therapy interventions and patient/family education.

Work cooperatively with other patient care providers using interdisciplinary teamwork.

Participate in performance improvement programs and development activities.

Provide input in budgetary planning processes, contribute to cost-effectiveness of services provided by the department.

Communicate observations and suggestions related to opportunities for improvement.

Maintain positive rapport with all customers.

Participate in department cleaning, organizing, and monitoring equipment safety/status.

Assist the unit secretary as needed and as appropriate.

Pathologists may be assigned to orient staff and students.

Assist in WMMC support groups as appropriate.

Maintains regular and predictable attendance.

Performs other essential duties as assigned.

Requirements

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE/SKILL REQUIREMENTS High school diploma or equivalent. M.S. or M.A. degree in Speech Language Pathology from an accredited ASHA certified school. Valid registration and licensure as a Speech-Language Pathologist by the Missouri Board of Registration for the Healing Arts. Must be working towards of have earned their Certificate of Clinical Competence from the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association. Knowledgeable regarding growth and development and assessing the physical and psychological needs of patients of all ages as allowed by the Missouri State Practice Act for Speech-Language Pathologists. Current American Heart Association (AHA) BLS required or obtained within 60 days of hire. Must be self-motivated and have the ability to work within the established policies, procedures and practices prescribed by the hospital/clinic. English sufficient to provide and receive instructions/directions. PHYSICAL/MENTAL REQUIREMENTS Must be able to sit and stand, intermittent 8 to 10 hours a day. Must be able to use standard office equipment, including the telephone and computer keyboard. Continuously works under pressure of near 100% accuracy while meeting inflexible deadlines. Continuously utilizes manual/bi-manual dexterity, near vision, speech, and hearing. Frequently stands, walks, sits and utilizes eye/hand coordination and color definition. Occasionally reaches above shoulder, regularly required to lift and/or carry up to 40 lbs. Occasionally walks on uneven surfaces.
