Under the direction of the practice plan management, the Nurse Practitioner provides general women’s health care throughout a woman’s lifespan from adolescence through post menopause. The NP records patient medical histories and encounter notes, performs physical exams, orders laboratory and diagnostic tests and procedures, manages therapy, prescribes, refers as necessary, and conducts other activities that promote women’s health and reduce health risks. The NP provides gynecologic and family planning care, and low risk obstetrical care, including postpartum care.

Key responsibilities
Obtain patient health histories and complete physical examinations. Document findings noting pertinent normal and abnormal findings.
Order and interpret appropriate diagnostic and laboratory tests.
Explain the necessity, preparation, nature and anticipated effects of procedure(s) to patient, family, and staff.
Perform approved therapeutic procedures based upon patient’s clinical status.
Document patient preparation and response to procedure(s).
Assist other clinical office professionals when necessary.
Collaborate with physician colleagues and document in medical records and appropriate narrative summaries.
Provide patient and family education related to prenatal, intrapartum, postpartum, and interconception care.
Utilize current research and evidence-based decision-making in all clinical practice.
Perform and participate in quality/performance improvement activities.
Role model advanced practice professional nursing through conduct, appearance, communication, mutual respect, leadership, ethical decision-making, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills.
Obtain MD consultation as appropriate within scope of practice guidelines.
Demonstrate responsibility for professional practice through active participation in professional organizations and continuing education. Enhance the body of knowledge of nursing or area of specialization through exchange of ideas and knowledge in professional organizations.
Maintain continuing education as mandated by certifying body.
