The Occupational Therapist implements evaluation and treatment procedures for medically disabled patients to improve functional status. They also provide education to patients and families while collaborating with the healthcare team to establish and document therapy goals.
Evaluates patients’ physical and functional status as related to medical diagnosis. Administers tests reflective of current standards of practice including sensory, manual muscle, range of motion, and other evaluation techniques. Evidence of timely treatment planning based on objective findings. Establishes short- and long-term therapy goals, formulates treatment plans consistent with goals. Utilizes critical thinking to determine priorities in treatment to address barriers. Accurately completes charges for therapy services provided on day of service. Charges appropriately based upon current reimbursement guidelines specified by carriers. Regularly documents patient’s progress to goals. Provides updates to physician and other treatment members. Maintains knowledge of current trends and developments in the field through reading and attending related conferences and seminars. Prepares and provides in-service presentation. Participates in community activity and committees as requested by Leadership. Assists with program development as requested by Leadership. Mentors co-workers in area of clinical expertise. Participates as Clinical Instructor with students as requested. EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, AND LICENSURE Bachelor's or Master’s Degree in Occupational Therapy. Certification by American Occupational Therapy Certification Board as an Occupational Therapist, Registered. Current Michigan registration as an Occupational Therapist. REQUIRED SKILLS AND ABILITIES Knowledge of anatomy, physiology, and occupational therapy treatment and modalities. Interpersonal skills necessary to communicate effectively with patients and patients’ families when providing treatments and instructing same in use of therapeutic devices and methods as well as with other treatment team members when gathering and exchanging patient condition/progress information. Analytical skills necessary to evaluate patient’s physical and functional status, establish therapy goals, formulate treatment plans consistent with goals, and observe patients and document progress/condition. Ability to concentrate and pay close attention to detail for up to 80% of work time when administering treatments, observing patients and maintaining records. Able to react quickly in sudden unplanned situations in order to prevent or minimize injuries to patients and/or staff. Able to walk and stand up for up to 50% of work time while administering treatments. Able to lift, push and pull weights with an effective force of approximately 40-60 pounds (with or without mechanical devices or other personnel) for up to 20% of work time when positioning and moving patients. Able to communicate effectively with patients, patients’ families and other health center personnel. Candidates must hold a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Occupational Therapy and possess current Michigan registration. Certification by the American Occupational Therapy Certification Board as a Registered Occupational Therapist is required.
