The Sterile Technician is responsible for the preparation, sterilization, and distribution of medical instruments to ensure safe and efficient patient care. They must maintain a clean work environment, operate sterilization equipment, and perform regular inventory inspections.

Purpose

To support the Wilmington Health ASC department in providing safe and efficient care to patients, by performing instrument care duties such as preparation, sterilization, and distribution.

Essential Duties/Responsibilities

  • Philosophy 1. Supports the facility's ideology, mission, goals and objectives 2. Performs in accordance with the facility's policies and procedures 3. Cognizant of patient's rights and responsibilities and supports them in performance of job duties 6. Participates in facility commi ttees, meetings, inservices, and activities
  • Communication 1. Communicates effectively and professionally with patients, visitors, physicians, and co-workers 2. Interactions with others are positive, respectful, and considerate
  • Financial Practices 1. Utilizes facility resources appropriately avoiding wasteful practices 2. Reports wasteful practices 3. Analyzes work area and makes recommendations for potential cost-effective improvements
  • Compliance Program 1. Contributes to the progress and development of the organization's adopted Compliance Program 2. Performs according to established compliance policies and procedures
  • Performance Improvement Program 1. Contributes to the progress and development of the organization's adopted Performance Improvement Program 2. Performs according to established performance improvement policies and procedures
  • Safety/Risk Management Program 1. Adheres to safety policies and procedures in performing job duties and responsibilities 2. Reports observed or suspected safety violations, hazards, and policy and procedure noncompliance to the Safety Officer or other designated person
  • Professional Competence 1. Maintains professional competence by participating in continuing education and other learning experiences 2. Contributes to growth and education of staff by sharing knowledge gained in continuing education 3. Maintains membership in relevant professional organizations 4. Seeks new learning experiences by accepting challenging opportunities and responsibilities 5. Open to suggestions and recommendations
  • Duties 1. Maintains a clean and orderly central processing work area (e.g. shelves, counters, equipment). 2. Adheres to the sterilization process policies and procedures. 3. Cleans each item according to manufacturer's instruction 4. Inspects instruments visually for damage and defects; lubricates items as required. 5. Determines that each item is in good working condition 6. Sorts and arranges items into proper trays according to established policy and procedure. 7. Wraps trays and individual items according to established policy and procedure. 8. Accurately labels each item with name and expiration date. 9. Correctly operates sterilizers, ultrasonic washer and other equipment for processing items. 10. Positions items correctly in sterilizer and selects proper cycle; seeks assistance when needed. 11. Checks indicators for proper functioning. 12. Performs required biological/chemical monitoring tests on all sterilizers and maintains logs according to established policies and procedures.

  • Maintains inventory levels and accurate records.

  • Performs weekly inspections of all sterile items in the facility.

  • Checks for outdated items and package integrity of wrapped sterilized items; replaces items as necessary.
  • 6.
  • Places items in correct location.
  • 7.
  • Maintains adequate inventory of supplies for the sterile processing area.
  • 8.
  • Maintains and updates the instrument tray inventory list.
  • 9.
  • Maintains current information regarding routine preference cards.
  • 10.
  • Accurately documents count of instruments loaned/returned to outside sources.

Qualifications

Required

  • High School Graduate or GED Certification
  • Training or courses in sterile technique, sterilization of instruments
  • Strong ethical and moral character references
  • Full COVID 19 vaccination is required for ASC positions only.

Preferred

  • Instrument Processing Technician experience
  • ASC experience

Requirements
