About the role

The surgical technologist prepares the operating room by setting up sterile instruments and equipment while maintaining a sterile field throughout procedures. They assist surgeons by passing supplies, holding retractors, and managing specimens while ensuring patient safety and proper equipment maintenance.

General summary of duties

Under the supervision of the Operating Room Manager/Director of Nursing, according to the organizational structure, and at the direction of Registered Nurses, performs surgical scrubbing. Assures proper care and maintenance of all surgical instrumentation and equipment while maintaining the sterile field. Demonstrates good knowledge of principles and practices of aseptic technique and infection control. Demonstrates knowledge of all equipment, instruments, procedures and supplies utilized in the operating room.

  • Projects a professional demeanor and appearance while maintaining the confidentiality of patients, co-workers, and the surgery center and adhering to the HIPAA policy.
  • Reports, in good faith, any known or suspected activity that appears to violate laws, rules, regulations or the Code of Conduct.
  • Fulfills annual continuing education requirements.
  • Personal attributes include the ability to be self-directed; demonstrates accountability, professionalism, and receptiveness to change; seeks guidance, direction, and assistance when needed.
  • Works under stress and in situations that demand patience, stamina, endurance, and tact while providing impeccable service.
  • Fosters an attitude of teamwork and willingness to assist others and does not refuse performing other job duties as requested.
  • Set's priorities, responds timely to issues which require a decision, and ensures desired results are achieved by means of consistent follow through.

Education/Experience/Requirements

  • Demonstrates eligibility for employment in the U.S.
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Graduate of approved surgical technician program.
  • CST certification preferred
  • Minimum of 1-2 years experience in the Operating Room
  • Ability to achieve Basic Life Support certification within 60 days of hire.
  • Ability to relate and work effectively with others
  • Demonstrated skills in verbal and written English communications for safe and effective patient care and to meet documentation standards.
  • Willingness to participate in goal-setting and educational activities for own professional advancement.
  • Is aware of surgical technician standards and performs in accordance with them.

Essential functions

Prepares and maintains medical equipment for surgical procedures.

Before an operation, surgical technologists help prepare the operating room by setting up surgical instruments and equipment, sterile drapes, and sterile solutions.

Follows hospital regulations and industry procedures to tend to patient during pre-operation procedures.

Assemble both sterile and non-sterile equipment, as well as adjust and check it to ensure it is working properly.

Help position them on the operating table and cover them with sterile surgical “drapes.”

Pass instruments and other sterile supplies to surgeons and surgeon assistants.

Hold retractors, cut sutures, and help count sponges, needles, supplies, and instruments. Help prepare, care for, and dispose of specimens taken for laboratory analysis and help apply dressings.

Operate sterilizers, lights, or suction machines, and help operate diagnostic equipment.

After an operation, help transfer patients to the recovery room and clean and restock the operating room.

Performs other duties as assigned.

Physical/Mental demands

Ability to be on your feet for long periods and lift or turn disabled patients.

Requires sitting and standing associated with a normal office environment.

Ability to concentrate for periods of up to four hours

Ability to communicate verbally both in person and on the telephone.

Ability to use computer keyboard and to view a computer monitor

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients in the center.
  • Must demonstrate the knowledge of the principle of growth and development of the life span and the possess the ability to assess data reflective of the patient’s requirements relative to his/her age specific needs and to provide the care needed as described in the center’s policies and procedures.
  • Demonstrates the ability to utilize recognized channels of communication.
  • Demonstrates the ability to maintain good interpersonal relationships with patients, co-workers, and other health team members.

Physical/Mental demands

Requires sitting and standing associated with a normal operating room environment. Surgical technologists work in clean, well-lighted, cool environments. Must stand for long periods and remain alert during operations. At times may be exposed to communicable diseases and unpleasant sights, odors, and materials.
