Essential Functions Performs basic histotechnology staining techniques. Operates computerized equipment for processing and staining specimens. Uses the laboratory computer system to add, cancel, and verify completed orders. Performs and documents quality control and preventive maintenance procedures. Troubleshoots instruments, processing, and staining processes. Places engineering and biomed service requests as needed. Prepares stock and working reagents and maintains an adequate supply. Receives and processes specimens, answers the telephone, and greets guests to the department. Reports all unacceptable quality control and instrument failures to a senior technologist, pathology coordinator, manager, and/or Pathologist, and documents discrepancies and their resolutions.

Assumes at least one of the following responsibilities: outside facility frozen section room maintenance, projects, teaching, tech in charge, reagent validations, or evaluation of new technology. Maintains reasonably regular, punctual attendance consistent with Orlando Health policies, the ADA, FMLA and other federal, state and local standards. Maintains compliance with all Orlando Health policies and procedures. Other Related Functions Maintains an active role in the laboratory quality improvement program, including performance and evaluation of key quality indicators. Follows established policies and procedures to meet regulatory and accrediting agencies requirements. Practices infection control and safety policies. Maintains confidentiality of patient records, hospital, and departmental matters at all times.

Qualifications

  • Education/Training Associate’s degree required.
  • Bachelor's degree preferred.
  • Graduate from an approved school of Histotechnology is required.
  • Licensure/Certification Maintains a current Florida license as a Clinical Laboratory Technologist (Qualification: Histology Technologist).
  • Certified as a Histotechnician (HT) or Histotechnologist (HTL), or eligible for either certification through a professional laboratory agency such as the American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP).

Requirements

Candidates must hold an Associate's degree and have graduated from an approved school of Histotechnology. A current Florida license as a Clinical Laboratory Technologist and certification as an HT or HTL are required.
