About the Role

The Sleep Technologist plays a critical role in the diagnosis and treatment of patients with sleep disorders by conducting overnight and daytime sleep studies in a clinical setting.

This position requires the technologist to operate specialized equipment to monitor and record physiological data such as brain activity, eye movement, muscle activity, heart rhythm, and breathing patterns.

The Sleep Technologist collaborates closely with physicians and other healthcare professionals to ensure accurate data collection and patient comfort throughout the testing process.

They are responsible for preparing patients for studies, explaining procedures, and ensuring adherence to safety and quality standards.

Ultimately, the role contributes significantly to improving patient outcomes by providing essential data that informs effective treatment plans for sleep-related conditions.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent required; Associate degree or higher in a related health field preferred.
  • Certification as a Registered Polysomnographic Technologist (RPSGT) or equivalent credential is required.
  • Prior experience conducting sleep studies or working in a sleep laboratory setting.
  • Basic knowledge of human anatomy, physiology, and sleep disorders.
  • Ability to work flexible hours, including overnight shifts, as sleep studies often occur during nighttime.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Respiratory Therapy, Neurodiagnostics, or a related healthcare field.
  • Additional certifications such as Certified Sleep Technologist (CST) or credentials in respiratory therapy.
  • Experience with advanced sleep diagnostic equipment and software.
  • Strong background in patient education and counseling related to sleep hygiene and treatment adherence.
  • Familiarity with electronic medical records (EMR) systems and data management.

Responsibilities

  • Set up and calibrate polysomnographic and other sleep study equipment prior to patient testing.
  • Monitor patients during sleep studies to ensure data quality and patient safety, adjusting equipment as necessary.
  • Collect and analyze physiological data including EEG, EOG, EMG, ECG, respiratory effort, and oxygen saturation.
  • Prepare detailed reports summarizing study findings for review by sleep physicians.
  • Maintain accurate patient records and ensure compliance with all regulatory and privacy standards.
  • Educate patients about the sleep study process and address any concerns to promote comfort and cooperation.
  • Perform routine maintenance and troubleshooting of sleep study equipment to ensure optimal functionality.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to support comprehensive patient care and follow-up.
