About the role

The Multiskilled Technician assists nursing staff with basic patient care tasks, including hygiene, vital signs, and patient positioning. They also perform clerical duties such as transcribing physician orders, managing charts, and facilitating communication between hospital departments.

Overview Assist the Registered Nurse or the Licensed Practical Nurse in patient care tasks not requiring licensure.

Implements care under the supervision of an RN or LPN.

Performs clerical functions according to the nursing service policies and procedures.

Performs visual/observation skills to watch ECG tracings of a remote cardiac monitor, recognizes abnormalities, and reports these appropriately.

Provides specimen transport.

Facilitates communication between the nursing staff, physicians, visitors and other hospital departments.

Responsibilities

Provides clerical functions to include: answering the phone, prepares chart material, and transcribes physician’s orders with nursing oversight, accurate and timely data entry per computer/medical forms, discharge procedures. Provides basic patient care that can be safely and legally delegated by the nursing staff. Tasks may include: appropriate hygiene care; positioning of patients in proper body alignment; assisting with nutritional/hydration needs; providing elimination assistance; assists with patient weights, vital signs; , and patient teaching; care for patients in isolation; assisting with transport or discharging of patients; and ambulation assistance. Accurately enters documentation into the EMR. Communicates patient’s status and progress to the primary nurse; communicates appropriately with patients, family/visitors, and hospital team members. Maintains department and hospital supplies as indicated; assist in care and maintenance of department and facility equipment. Flexible to scheduling of hours and shifts to meet hospital staffing needs. Demonstrates ability to be flexible, organized, and function under stressful situations. Assumes accountability for appropriate utilization of resources. Performs other duties as assigned within the scope of practice for PCAII, unity secretary.

Qualifications

Education: High school graduate or GED preferred.

Experience

  • PCA II- Certification by state exam or former employer, National Certification or prior healthcare experience or successful completion of the Fundamentals of Nursing semester/quarter of nursing school. Previous experience as a unit secretary or MST preferred or other related experiences supportive of the ability to be trained to perform duties. Computer knowledge and skills or the ability to be trained.

  • Skills/Abilities: CPR certification or capability to certify within 3 months. Capable of working under occasional stress due to multiple calls and inquiries. Capable of communicating verbally with staff, patients, and visitors. Capable of working overtime as required. Capable of working hours assigned to include (all) shifts, weekends, and holidays. Able to read, write and speak the English language.

Requirements

Candidates should have a high school diploma or GED, with preference given to those with prior healthcare experience or nursing school fundamentals. Certification as a PCA II or equivalent experience is required, along with the ability to obtain CPR certification within three months.
