About the role

The Physician Assistant is responsible for conducting patient histories, performing physical exams, and providing clinical care including surgery assistance and inpatient rounding. They also interpret diagnostic tests, prescribe medications, and perform therapeutic procedures under the supervision of a physician.

Job Summary

Physician Assistant is responsible for obtaining complete and comprehensive patient histories, performing physical examinations, writing orders, responding to patient questions and providing information to patients and their families. Required to assist in surgery, casting, fracture care, wound care, and inpatient rounding as requested. Exercises judgment within their areas of competence provided that a member of the supervising physician team shall have the ultimate responsibility for patient care.

Job Responsibilities

Order, perform and interpret laboratory tests, diagnostic and invasive procedures as appropriate.

Following physician observation and approval of technique, perform therapeutic or corrective measures, including but not limited to suturing, incision and drainage, casting and splinting.

Refer patients to appropriate specialists, services and community resources (i.e. physical therapy, other subspecialists and social services).

Provide and conduct hospital admissions, contingent upon appropriate hospital clinical privileges.

Provide emergency care in collaboration with the physician.

Provide preventative care and counseling on health and awareness related conditions.

Prescribe appropriate medications as needed.

The supervising physician or physician designee reviews all patient encounters no later than (72) seventy-two hours after the physician assistant has seen the patient. (100% of charts in first 3 years of employment; 50% of charts thereafter. IN code 25-27.5-6-1)

Education Requirements • Minimum

  • Graduate of an approved/accredited physician assistant program
  • Preferred: Masters degree.

Experience Requirements • Minimum

  • One (1) year of clinical experience
  • Preferred: Three (3) years of experience in medical office
  • License/Certification Requirements
  • Physician Assistant License valid to practice in the state of Indiana
  • Controlled Substances Registration license in the state of Indiana
  • Basic Life Safety (American Heart Association)
