Job Duties

  • The Virginia Department of Health (VDH) is dedicated to protecting and promoting the health of Virginians.
  • The VDH is made up of a statewide Central Office in Richmond and 35 local health districts.
  • The Richmond & Henrico County Health Districts (RHHD) are on the forefront of Public Health and Population Health.

  • We accomplish this by exposing and addressing the root causes of health disparities and protecting health through disease prevention and monitoring, providing clinical services, nutrition services, environmental health services, vital records, emergency planning, and building health equity by partnering with communities and working collaboratively across sectors.

  • The Richmond and Henrico Health District is currently seeking Public Health Nurses.
  • Our PH Nurses work in program areas such as Immunization, Family Planning, STI, Communicable Disease, and may do home visits.
  • This is a multi-fill posting and each position will work out of one of our three locations- Richmond Health Clinic (400 E.
  • Cary St), East Henrico Health Clinic (1400 N Laburnum), or West Henrico Health Clinic (8600 Dixon Powers Drive) but may be expected to work from any other location in the community as needed.
  • Standard work hours are Monday – Friday, 8:00 am – 5:00 pm (occasional evening and weekend hours based on community events).
  • Mileage reimbursement is available for any work-related travel.
  • Independently provides professional nursing care to patients in clinics, homes and schools and other community or congregate care settings.
  • Performs nursing assessments, may perform lab tests, take measurements, develop and implement care plans, including the administration of medication and case management.
  • Participates in public health emergencies and community health assessments.
  • Actions performed at this level require licensure as a RN by state code.
  • May supervise support staff.

Requires licensure as an RN in Virginia or compact state. If a new graduate, must obtain RN license within 90 days of the date of hire or subject to termination per the regulations governing the practice of nursing. Requires BLS certification. Re-quires adherence to all safety policies including a review of immunizations, driver safety policies and all other state policies.

VDH requires all Health-Care Personnel (HCP) to maintain timely compliance with all Employee Health requirements, including but not limited to HCP-required immunizations, health screenings, respiratory protections, and relevant trainings, as mandated by organizational policy and applicable regulatory standards. Maintain active BLS certification. Complete all required program competency trainings.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Communicates verbally and in writing, to analyze problems, situations and suggest solutions, leadership, follow directions and establish priorities
  • Skills in physical examination, health assessment, and interviewing and counseling technique
  • Ability to function independently, prioritize and organize work, solve problems, adapt to change, function as a team member and relate to the public
  • Knowledge of public health concepts, principles of public health nursing, principles of epidemiology; immunizations; basic nursing science, medical terminology, case management
  • May travel and some weekend and/or evening hours may be required
  • Must be certified in Basic Life Support (BLS)/CPR
  • Additional Considerations
  • Experience in a public health setting or one related to disease prevention and health promotion
  • Bilingual preferred
