About the role

The Speech Pathologist provides direct and indirect patient care, including evaluations and the development of therapeutic intervention programs for patients with physical and cognitive impairments. They also participate in clinical team initiatives, maintain patient records, and supervise support personnel and students.

This is an inpatient position within Stanyan hospital Rehabilitation Services department. The Per Diem Speech Pathologist reports to the Clinical Supervisor and provides both direct and indirect patient care services. The Per Diem Speech Pathologist works primarily with adult and geriatric patients from diverse socioeconomic and cultural backgrounds. The Per Diem Speech Pathologist with specific pediatric competencies and clinical experience may also work with infants, children and/or adolescents.

Under general direction and upon receipt of written referrals from licensed, approved providers, the Per Diem Speech Pathologist plans and administers a full range of speech and dysphagia therapy services for patients with a variety of physical and cognitive impairments. Services include patient evaluations using speech-language pathology tests and measurements, establishment of therapeutic intervention goals and the development of therapeutic intervention programs, and implementation of therapeutic intervention plans utilizing all aspects of the speech-language pathology scope of practice.

The Per Diem Speech Pathologist maintains all applicable patient records related to the delivery of patient care services. While performing job duties, the Per Diem Speech Pathologist may also supervise support personnel including Rehabilitation Aides as well as Speech-Language Pathology students and clinical fellows. As a member of the clinical care team, the Per Diem Speech Pathologist also participates in compliance, quality, safety, and process improvement initiatives in the department and the hospital.

The Per Diem Therapist minimum work requirement is two (2) weekend day shifts per month, and one (1) major and one (1) minor Winter UC Holiday (i.e., Thanksgiving/Day After, Dec24/25, Dec 31/Jan 1).

Responsibilities

DUTIES & ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS Identify the functions or tasks that employees in the job perform. The essential functions should state the purpose of the work and the results to be accomplished, rather than how the function is performed. The functions should add up to 100%. % of time Essential Function (Yes/No) Key Responsibilities (To be completed by Supervisor) 85% YES Direct and Indirect Patient Care 1. Performs Speech Language Pathology evaluations on referral by a licensed physician or dentist and administers various neurological, dysphagia, cognitive-linguistic, voice and speech-language tests to determine a patient’s functional limitations. 2. Establishes short- and long-term therapeutic goals based on the results of the evaluation and in consultation with the referring provider and caregiver/family. 3. Develops a therapeutic plan of care based on the results of the evaluation and established goals. Makes appropriate changes in therapeutic interventions based on the patient’s progress and performance. 4. Administers direct patient care utilizing the full range of speech-language pathology techniques and methods within scope of practice and level of competence, appropriate to the patient’s goals and plan of care. 5. Delegates and supervises any part of the patient’s therapeutic intervention that can be legally and appropriately done by support staff. 6. Completes all aspects of discharge planning as appropriate. 7. Prepares and maintains accurate and timely patient care records as required by policy and payer requirements, including services rendered, progress notes, discharge notes, charges for services provided, and third-party payer reports (eg CCS, Medi-Cal) 8. Communicates effectively and efficiently with patients, caregivers/families, department staff, managers, and other clinical personnel. 9. Reports on patient progress at various rounds, clinics, and team conferences as indicated. 10. Demonstrates effective time management and organization skills. 11. Performs any other duties related to patient care, as required. 15% YES Departmental Responsibilities 1. Completes work-related routine departmental tasks (eg. timecard completion, schedule sign up) in a timely manner. 2. Communicates clearly and timely with Supervisor and Manager regarding work requirements including changes in availability/status, conformance with licensure and AHA BLS certification renewal, and completion of UC required learning. 3. Participates in and supports department and organizational compliance, quality, safety, and process improvement activities. 4. Performs any other duties, as assigned by the Supervisor or Manager. 5. Qualifications

  • Required qualifications
  • Masters degree with clinical fellowship o If graduated 15 or more years ago, a bachelor’s degree
  • Minimum one year of patient care experience.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in English, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to recognize signs of distress.
  • Basic computer skills including work within Epic electronic medical record.
  • Possession of good interpersonal, time management, problem solving and self-initiation skills.
  • This position requires flexibility to orient and work at all UCSF Medical Center locations.
  • Preferred qualification
  • Experience providing patient care in acute care hospitals and acute rehab/IRF patient care settings.
  • Experience/competence with Modified Barium Swallow Studies and Fiberoptic Endoscopic Evaluation of Swallowing
  • Required licenses/Certifications
  • Possession of or proven eligibility for licensure as a Speech Language Pathologist by the Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology Board of California.
  • Possession of or proven eligibility for AHA BLS certification.
