About the role

The HIM Vital Statistics Specialist is responsible for processing and filing birth and death certificates in compliance with state regulations. They serve as a liaison between patients, medical staff, and the State Bureau of Vital Records to ensure accurate documentation.

Job Summary

The HIM Vital Statistics Specialist completes and files birth and death certificates according to guidelines established by the Rhode Island Department of Health, Division of Vital Records. Processes, completes, and registers Voluntary Affidavits of Paternity. The incumbent ensures the accuracy of the information, processes certificates, and serves as a resource to the State Bureau of Vital Records. Assists external departments in processes of births, deaths and fetal deaths.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Ensures the daily morning birth collection and distribution job specific process is accomplished efficiently and accurately.
  • Ensures the accuracy of all birth and death certificate information.
  • Processes all birth and death certificates.
  • Work with and support the State Bureau of Vital Records.
  • Work with and support the State Bureau of Vital Records.
  • Serves as liaison between the patient and Department of Health, Division of Vital Records.
  • Provide assistance and support to hospital medical staff.
  • Demonstrates expertise in using current software programs, and willingness to learn new programs.
  • Provides support and assistance within the department.
  • Participates in functions to achieve overall department goals and objectives.
  • Performs other job-related duties as required or directed.

Requirements

  • Associates Degree with appropriate clerical skills or at least three years equivalent experience in a healthcare environment.
  • Must have knowledge of Medical Terminology, Word Processing and other computer applications.
  • Knowledge/experience in health information applications preferred.
  • Proficient knowledge of Laws and Regulations established by the State of RI Department of Health, Vital Records, in processing and registering all birth and death certificates preferred.
  • Must be able to type a minimum of 50 words per minute and operate standard office equipment as necessary.
  • Ability to work without constant supervision.
  • Must have excellent interpersonal and communication skills and be proficient in the English language.
  • Notary Public in the State of Rhode Island or eligible to become one.
  • Must have flexibility to occasionally work additional, unscheduled hours, including holidays.
