About the role

The technician is responsible for decontaminating, assembling, and sterilizing surgical instruments and medical devices to ensure patient safety. They must also maintain accurate documentation and ensure sterilized items are delivered to the appropriate storage locations.

AM - 3:30 PM As a Sterile Processing Technician I, you’ll play a vital behind-the-scenes role in keeping our surgical teams ready and, most importantly, our patients safe. From decontaminating, assembling, and sterilizing surgical instruments and medical devices to ensuring they’re accurately tracked and delivered where they’re needed, you’ll be an essential part of the clinical team. You’ll follow infection control standards, manufacturer guidelines, and regulatory requirements while maintaining accurate documentation and contributing to quality improvement efforts. Responsibilities

Sort, decontaminate and clean instruments, equipment, and devices according to manufacturer guidelines, ensuring thorough cleaning for safe handling Operate a variety of washer decontamination equipment, adhering to infection control principles and Spaulding’s classifications Assemble instruments trays accurately, using tray content lists to ensure accuracy Inspect instruments for cleanliness and functionality, identify and remove defective instruments from service, coordinating repairs through established processes Sterilize or disinfect instruments and supplies based on manufacturer’s instructions utilizing various machines and methods: steam, vaporized hydrogen peroxide and high-level disinfection Configure sterilizer equipment settings to ensure correct time and temperature parameters Maintain clean and organized work areas, including surface areas, racks, shelves, and storage cabinets, to meet standards for sterile material handling Deliver sterilized items to designated storage locations, ensuring accessibility for future use

Qualifications

Education: High School Diploma or equivalent required.

Experience

  • At least one (1) year of sterile processing experience is preferred.
  • License(s)/Certification(s): Certified Registered Central Service Technician – The Healthcare Sterile Processing Association (HSPA) or Central Sterile Processing Distribution Tech (CSPDT) – Certified Board for Sterile Processing and Distribution Inc. (CBSPD) preferred. IL & IA Child Abuse Mandatory Reporter Training in state(s) where providing care required within 90 days of hire. IL & IA Adult Dependent Abuse Mandatory Reporter Training in state(s) where providing care required within 90 days of hire.

Requirements

Candidates must have a high school diploma or equivalent and are preferred to have at least one year of sterile processing experience. Professional certification such as HSPA or CSPDT is also preferred.
