The Surgical Technologist provides patient care and maintains the operating room under the direction of a Registered Nurse. Responsibilities include setting up surgical equipment, maintaining strict sterile technique, and assisting with intraoperative procedures.

Job Description

The Surgical Technologist is responsible for the provision of patient care activities, related non-professional services necessary for patient care and the maintenance of the operating room under the direction of a Registered Nurse. The duties listed below are intended to describe the general nature and level of work performed by employees in this position. They are not to be construed as an exclusive list of all job duties performed in this position. The Surgical Technologist is responsible for the implementation of technical components of patient care under the supervision of a licensed nurse according to policy, procedure, and protocol. Clinical Practice Demonstrates competency in all procedures within the scope of practice, as appropriate to the ages of the patients served, including the ability to obtain, interpret and communicate information in terms of the patient’s needs, a knowledge of growth and development, and an understanding of the range of treatment need by the age groups treated at the facility. The Surgical Technologist is responsible for participating in the nursing process in all aspects of the delivery of patient care and completion of all activities according to established policy, procedure and protocol. Communicates accurate and timely information to the Registered Nurse regarding patient in their care. Records pertinent information clearly, accurately, and in a timely manner. Demonstrates positive interpersonal relationships with patients, significant others, and co-workers. Utilizes appropriate lines of communication. Utilizes appropriate technique intraoperatively by set up of needed items for patient care as well as demonstrating knowledge of a variety of surgical procedures Gathering supplies, x-rays and instruments/equipment for cases. Handles instruments appropriately. Maintains strict sterile technique. Demonstrates ability to circulate under direction of Registered Nurse by: Appraises cleanliness of rooms and proper functioning of equipment. Sets up needed equipment pertinent to patient care. Assists with anesthesia intraoperatively. Carefully preps surgical site. Assists in proper patient positioning. Prepares and labels specimens correctly. Accompanies patient and anesthesia staff to PACU. Demonstrates knowledge of a variety of surgical procedures. Under direction of Registered Nurse, organizes a plan of care that incorporates physician prescribed treatments, nursing assessments and diagnostic data in a manner that: Is prioritized; Is timely; and Is integrated with the surgical plan of care. Under the direction of the Registered Nurse, implements, documents and evaluates the plan of care in a manner that: Reflects management of identified problems. Reflects observations of patient’s response to treatment. Integrates physician’s orders into the plan. Demonstrates appropriate prioritization. Reflects collaboration with physicians and other members of the team. Demonstrates knowledge of appropriate administration of medications and treatments according to policy, procedure and protocol. Re-evaluates and modifies the plan of care as indicated. Clinical Leadership Accepts responsibility for nursing activities related to the care of the patient within the operating room. Demonstrates appropriate judgment and decision making skills. Serves as a preceptor and orients new members of the surgical team. Acts as the patient’s advocate in meeting his/her physical and psychological needs. Demonstrates effective communication skills and the ability to recognize and intervene in stressful situations involving the patient, significant other and/or team members. Creates and maintains a safe and comfortable environment in which surgery can take place.

Requirements

1 to 2 years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Knowledgeable of Principles of Aseptic Technique Ability to correlate clinical data with patient's medical and nursing care. Ability to set priorities. Ability to provide direction to others that is clear, concise and promotes efficiency. Ability to communicate well with patients, families, co-workers, etc.
