About the role

The phlebotomist is responsible for preparing patients for blood collection, performing draws safely, and accurately labeling specimens for laboratory testing. They must also maintain a sanitary work environment, update electronic medical records, and provide compassionate care to patients.

Essential

Duties & Responsibilities

Prepare patients for blood collection procedures. Perform blood draws safely, accurately, and efficiently. Explain blood draw procedures to patients and answer questions regarding the collection process. Verify patient identity and information prior to specimen collection. Properly label, handle, store, and prepare blood specimens for laboratory testing and transportation. Prepare and organize phlebotomy supplies, including needles, collection tubes, specimen containers, and other required materials. Follow all infection-control, OSHA, health, safety, and sanitation procedures. Maintain a clean, organized, and sanitary work area. Accurately document and update patient and specimen information in the electronic medical record and applicable systems. Provide reassurance and compassionate assistance to patients who may be nervous, anxious, or uncomfortable during blood draws. Monitor phlebotomy and laboratory supplies and communicate restocking needs. Maintain patient confidentiality and comply with HIPAA requirements and Soma Medical Center policies. Communicate effectively and professionally with physicians, medical assistants, laboratory personnel, patients, and other members of the healthcare team. Follow the directions of supervising physicians and clinical leadership. Perform additional duties as assigned based on the needs of Soma Medical Center.

Qualifications

High school diploma or equivalent required. Phlebotomy certification preferred. Previous phlebotomy or blood collection experience preferred. Knowledge of proper blood collection, specimen labeling, handling, and infection-control procedures. Strong attention to detail and commitment to patient safety. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills. Ability to remain professional and compassionate when working with nervous or difficult patients. Ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced healthcare environment. Bilingual English/Spanish preferred. Dependable, punctual, and able to work effectively as part of a healthcare team.
