Pathways to Independence, Inc. is a private nonprofit organization providing pre-vocational and vocational training opportunities to adults with disabilities. PTI was founded in 1978, as a sheltered workshop, by a group of concerned community members who recognized the need in the West Hudson, South Bergen areas for vocational training and employment for persons with disabilities. Since then, the agency has continued to expand its spectrum of services to include assisting people with various disabilities in pertinent employment settings.

Our commitment is to provide the best quality services possible to consumers we serve. Through the training programs PTI offers, it is our intent that each individual will develop the skills necessary to create his or her own future, filled with promise of dreams realized.

  • Pathways to Independence, Inc. is approved for service by the New Jersey Division of Vocational Rehabilitation Services, the New Jersey Division of Developmental Disabilities, the Commission for the Blind and Visually Impaired and New Jersey Transit. About the Role

The Direct Support Professional (DSP) plays a vital role in enhancing the quality of life for individuals with developmental, intellectual, or physical disabilities by providing compassionate and personalized care.

This position involves supporting clients in their daily activities, promoting independence, and fostering community integration.

The DSP collaborates closely with families, healthcare providers, and other team members to implement individualized care plans that meet each client’s unique needs.

Through patience, empathy, and professionalism, the DSP helps clients achieve their personal goals and maintain their dignity and well-being.

Ultimately, this role is essential in creating a supportive environment that empowers individuals to lead fulfilling and meaningful lives.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Valid NJ driver’s license (or be able to obtain one within one month of hire date)
  • Ability to pass background checks, physical and drug screenings as mandated by state and federal regulations.
  • Basic knowledge of health and safety standards related to caregiving.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to follow detailed instructions.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous experience working with individuals with disabilities or in a caregiving role.
  • Certification in CPR and First Aid.
  • Training or coursework related to developmental disabilities or behavioral health.
  • Ability to handle emergency situations calmly and effectively.
  • Familiarity with electronic documentation systems and care management software.

Responsibilities

  • Assist clients with activities of daily living including personal hygiene, meal preparation, medication administration, and mobility support.
  • Implement individualized support plans by following specific instructions and adapting to the evolving needs of each client.
  • Encourage and facilitate community participation and social interaction to promote independence and inclusion.
  • Monitor and document client progress, behaviors, and any changes in health or well-being, communicating effectively with supervisors and healthcare professionals.
  • Provide emotional support and build trusting relationships with clients to foster a safe and positive environment.

Skills

  • The required skills such as effective communication and the ability to follow care plans are essential for daily interactions with clients and team members, ensuring that support is consistent and tailored.
  • Empathy and patience are critical in building trust and providing emotional support, which helps clients feel valued and understood.

Monday through Friday Hours are typically 8

30am-4:30pm If you are unable to work these hours, we may be able to offer a part time position with variable days and hours, based upon the needs of the organization

Requirements
