About the role

The Bone Density Technologist performs DEXA scans and body composition analysis while ensuring accurate patient positioning and data management. They also maintain equipment, educate patients on procedures, and assist with administrative tasks to support clinical operations.

OakLeaf Clinics – Imaging is looking for a part-time Bone Density Technologist to join their team! This position is 0.5 FTE, weekday clinic hours only (7:00 AM–5:00 PM) with no weekends or holidays!

OakLeaf Clinics is dedicated to providing patients with compassion, trust, and a lifetime of individualized care. Our healthcare network consists of physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, dietitians, nurses, respiratory therapists, medical assistants, and support staff working together with laboratory and imaging services to care for communities throughout the Chippewa Valley and surrounding areas.

Position description

The Bone Density Technologist specializes in bone density imaging and body composition analysis to support the diagnosis and management of osteoporosis and metabolic bone disease. This role requires precision, consistency, and a strong understanding of positioning protocols and quality control standards. The Bone Density Technologist works independently while supporting clinical teams through accurate imaging and data management.

Responsibilities

  • Performs DEXA scans of the spine, hip, forearm, and total body in accordance with manufacturer and departmental protocols
  • Review and validate imaging orders to ensure appropriate exam selection and patient eligibility
  • Collects and documents patient history relevant to bone density assessment (e.g., prior fractures, implants, medications)
  • Positions patients accurately to ensure reproducible and reliable measurements
  • Evaluates images for artifacts, positioning accuracy, and scan integrity; repeats studies when clinically necessary
  • Operates and maintains DEXA equipment, ensuring calibration and daily quality assurance checks are completed
  • Utilizes PACS and reporting systems to ensure accurate image and data transmission
  • Educates patients on exam expectations and post-exam instructions in a clear, reassuring manner
  • Maintains infection control and patient safety standards throughout all procedures
  • Monitors equipment functionality and reports issues promptly to the designated lead
  • Assists with scheduling, chart preparation, patient check-in, and prior study retrieval during periods of lower modality volume
  • Completes administrative tasks such as documentation, quality audits, and supply management
  • Maintains required DEXA-specific training and certifications
  • Supports departmental coverage and rotation as operational needs require
  • Cleans, disinfects, and inspects equipment
  • May assist with scheduling exams, rooming patients, reception services, including check-in, removing soiled linens, obtaining prior images and performing chart prep
  • Performs diagnostic exams at a technical level commensurate with training, certification and experience
  • Complete other duties as assigned
  • Work a flexible schedule within the clinic or department hours based on clinical demand or need

Qualifications

  • Graduate of School of Radiologic Technology
  • Bachelor’s degree preferred
  • New graduates welcome; two (2) years of experience preferred
  • AART Radiography (R) certification required
  • Wisconsin Radiologic License required
  • BLS from American Heart Association
  • Medical terminology knowledge and understanding of patient care notes
  • Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills
  • Detail oriented and accurate
  • Passionate about providing patient-focused care
  • Ability to multitask with attention to detail
  • Prior Epic experience – Preferred

Requirements

Candidates must be graduates of a School of Radiologic Technology and hold AART Radiography (R) certification along with a Wisconsin Radiologic License. A Bachelor's degree and prior experience with Epic software are preferred, and BLS certification is required.
