About the role

The Chaplain provides spiritual guidance, support, and crisis intervention to patients, families, and staff during illness, injury, or emergencies. They also perform religious services, lead prayer, and assist in coordinating pastoral visits.

The Chaplain (H) provides spiritual guidance and support during illness, injury, and emergency to patients, family members, and caregivers. Additionally, the incumbent performs religious services and leads prayer.

Core job functions

Provides confidential and non-judgmental listening, counsel, guidance, direction and support.

Offers crisis and disaster intervention, bereavement counseling, and guidance in ethical decision making.

Ensures that religious and spiritual needs of patients and their loved ones are met.

Counsels patients undergoing surgical procedures, facing end of life issues, or involved in traumatic accidents.

Communicates respectfully across cultures and with persons of different faiths.

Assists in the coordination of clergy and pastoral visits from the religious community.

Provides crisis intervention by visiting with patients, families, and staff, and making spiritual assessments.

Assesses spiritual needs of patients and families and assists families in using their faith in dealing with illness, trauma, and stress.

Supports staff in dealing with their emotions after the loss of a patient.

Adheres to University and unit-level policies and procedures and safeguards University assets.

Core qualifications

Education

Bachelor's degree required from an accredited institution required.

Master's of Divinity or equivalent graduate degree from an accredited (ATS) seminary or theological school preferred.

Four (4) units of Clinical Pastoral Education. All units must be recognized by one of the following: ACPE, NACC, NAJC, CPSP.

Certification and Licensing: Ecclesiastical endorsement, Ordination, or commissioning in a Religious Setting

Experience: Minimum 2 years of relevant experience required

Faith Tradition: Ideal Candidate – Catholic Faith Tradition

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Learning Agility: Ability to learn new procedures, technologies, and protocols, and adapt to changing priorities and work demands.
  • Teamwork: Ability to work collaboratively with others and contribute to a team environment.
  • Technical Proficiency: Skilled in using office software, technology, and relevant computer applications.
  • Communication: Strong and clear written and verbal communication skills for interacting with colleagues and stakeholders.
