About the role

The Care Attendant provides direct patient care, observation services, and support with activities of daily living under the direction of nursing staff. They are also responsible for maintaining a safe, clean patient environment and managing unit supplies.

  • UPMC McKeesport is seeking a CASUAL Nursing Assistant/Patient Care Technician to join our Resource Department—a flexible role that’s perfect for gaining hands-on experience in patient care. A perk of this position is that an additional 10%25 will be added to your base pay rate! This role is ideal for nursing students looking to build clinical skills and confidence. Candidates are required to Work 36 hours every 6 weeks—a manageable schedule that fits around your classes and clinicals Apply today! The Care Attendant provides limited patient care support, and observation services in accordance with established policies and procedures, and may be directed by the nurse or physician, to assure that the highest degree of quality patient care is maintained at all times. Must routinely perform the UPMC core responsibilities for Care Attendants: Maintains a safe patient environment, including safety checks, keeping patient rooms clean. Interacts and attends to patients and families on regular basis. Provides fall prevention, observation, bed making, ADLs (bathing, feeding, transporting, toileting, ambulating, turning/repositioning). Assists with I&O, weights. Skilled at constant observation and psychiatric observation competencies. ***Title will be determined based on candidate's individual experience**
  • 1. Direct Patient Care & Support Provide observation and direct patient care under the direction of the Registered Nurse (RN). Assist patients with activities of daily living (ADLs), including: Bathing Feeding Toileting Ambulating Transporting Turning and repositioning Provide one-on-one companionship and supervision for patients as needed. Assist with meal trays and patient nourishment. Fill water pitchers and distribute patient mail when applicable. Accompany patients during transport. 2. Patient Safety & Environment Maintain a safe, clean, and organized patient environment. Perform safety checks. Clean patient rooms and patient-specific equipment. Change bed linens and empty linen hampers. Follow all safety policies and procedures, including: Standard precautions Bloodborne pathogen exposure procedures Respond appropriately to emergent situations within the scope of the role. Support workplace safety for patients, visitors, and staff. 3. Supply & Equipment Management Acquire and distribute supplies and equipment needed for patient care. Perform messenger functions. Order supplies and process charging/crediting of supplies. Set up patient care equipment within the Care Attendant scope. Stock patient rooms and unit supply areas. Report equipment malfunctions to the appropriate department. 4. Communication & Team Collaboration Communicate effectively with RNs and other healthcare team members. Report changes in patient condition to the RN. Provide feedback regarding patient care needs. Establish effective communication strategies. Develop professional and respectful relationships with patients, families, and colleagues. Demonstrate awareness and respect for: Cultural diversity Workplace impairment concerns Horizontal violence prevention 5. Clerical & Administrative Support Complete clerical duties as assigned by the department. Answer telephones and assist with general unit activities. Support overall patient care operations and workflow. 6. Professional Development & Accountability Accept feedback and direction constructively. Identify and communicate learning and development needs. Seek assistance with planning and prioritizing work when needed. Participate in performance self-reviews. Take responsibility for assigned duties. Demonstrate enthusiasm, motivation, accountability, and commitment to patients and coworkers. View challenges as opportunities for improvement. 7. Department Operations & Continuous Improvement Support departmental changes and process improvements. Contribute to the efficient functioning of the department. Demonstrate awareness of how individual behavior impacts team operations. Maintain compliance with all patient care and hospital confidentiality policies. Perform duties in accordance with system-wide competencies and behaviors. Complete other duties as assigned.

If no previous patient care training, successful completion of UPMC care attendant(sitter) training program Knowledge of body mechanics and transfer techniques. Ability to effectively communicate both orally and in writing. Work permit required if under 18 years of age.

Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances

Basic Life Support (BLS) OR Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)CPR required based on AHA standards that include both a didactic and skills demonstration component within 30 days of hire Basic Life Support (BLS) OR Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) Act 34

Candidates must be able to perform patient care duties and possess or obtain BLS/CPR certification within 30 days of hire. If no prior training exists, successful completion of the UPMC care attendant training program is required.
