Proficient in the procurement of blood samples via venous and capillary techniques, from patients ranging in age from infant to geriatric. Utilizes use of the Laboratory Information System for activating, ordering, and resulting laboratory orders from providers and to result laboratory tests. Educates patients in the proper collection of specimens such as urine, stool and sputum. Reviews orders from providers, maintaining accuracy in ordering tests; occasionally must call providers' offices to obtain orders. Processes specimens in the appropriate way, including looking up specimen requirements, centrifuging and separating as necessary, and storing at the appropriate temperature to maintain sample integrity and testing acceptability. Readies specimens for transfer to reference laboratories, including completing the required paperwork for transfer and ensuring STAT specimens are processed and transported in a timely manner, including calling a STAT courier and completing the necessary paperwork for the transfer. Performs both waived and moderately complex CLIA testing in hematology, urinalysis, and serologiy areas under the guidance and supervision of an MLT or MT. Keeps accurate records, such as temperature monitoring, quality control for all laboratory testing and daily, weekly and monthly maintenance. Works together as a team in a fast paced environment to care for our patients while demonstrating Genesis Health System's standards of behavior.
General
Requirements: Medical Assistant, Certified Phlebotomist or other healthcare studies preferred. Strong computer skills with the ability to learn new systems and tools quickly. Must be comfortable operating in a collaborative, shared leadership environment. Must possess a personal presence that is characterized by a sense of honesty, integrity, and caring, with the ability to inspire and motivate others to promote the philosophy, mission, vision, goals, and values of Trinity Health and MercyOne.
High school diploma or GED required. Additional course work up to 1 year in healthcare studies. A high school diploma or GED is required, with additional healthcare coursework preferred. Candidates should have strong computer skills and ideally hold a certification as a Medical Assistant or Phlebotomist.
