Job Summary

As a Certified Medication Technician at Alpas Wellness La Plata, you will administer scheduled medications to patients in residential substance use disorder and mental health treatment. Working under the direction of a delegating nurse and within the Maryland Board of Nursing Medication Technician scope of practice, your primary responsibilities will include preparing and administering medications, documenting accurately in the electronic medical record, monitoring patients for medication effects and adverse reactions, and escalating all clinical findings to nursing staff. You will work closely with our Nursing team to ensure medication administration is safe, timely, and fully compliant with state regulation and facility policy.

  • Administer scheduled oral, topical, ophthalmic, otic, nasal, and inhalant medications as permitted under the Maryland Board of Nursing Medication Technician scope of practice and under the direction of the delegating nurse.

Requirements

Candidates must hold active Maryland Board of Nursing Certified Medication Technician (CMT) and Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) or Geriatric Nursing Assistant (GNA) certifications. A high school diploma or GED and CPR certification are also required for this role.

  • Verify each medication against the Medication Administration Record (MAR) and the prescriber's order prior to administration, applying the rights of medication administration without exception.
  • Document all administrations, refusals, omissions, and holds accurately and in real time within KIPU, including reason codes and nurse notification.

  • Maintain the security, organization, cleanliness, and proper storage conditions of the medication room, medication carts, refrigerated stock, and all medication supplies.
  • Receive, verify, and reconcile pharmacy deliveries; monitor par levels and expiration dating; notify nursing leadership of discrepancies, shortages, or expired stock.
  • Support the admission process by assisting nursing with medication reconciliation intake and the secure processing, storage, and disposition of patient-supplied medications.
  • Maintain active certification in good standing and complete all required continuing education, competency validation, and annual medication administration observations.
  • Utilize all required technology, company systems, and tools effectively to perform job duties.
  • Exhibit excellent customer relation skills through supportive and constructive communication with co-workers and others.
  • Follow adherence to all necessary regulatory and company compliance requirements (HIPAA, 42 CFR).
  • May be subject to the handling of and exposure to hazardous chemicals.
  • May be subject to exposure to infectious waste, diseases, conditions, etc, including TB, HIV, AIDS, and Hepatitis B viruses.
  • Maintain patient confidentiality, staff confidentiality; treat staff and patients with kindness, dignity and respect.
  • Comply with Patient's Rights rules.
  • Attend required meetings, including on-site staff meetings and multidisciplinary team meetings.

  • Required Knowledge, Skills, and Experience

    • Active Maryland Board of Nursing Certified Medication Technician (CMT) certification in good standing, required
    • Active Maryland Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) or Geriatric Nursing Assistant (GNA) certification in good standing, required
    • High School diploma or GED required
    • CPR certification required
    • Prior medication administration experience in behavioral health or substance use disorder treatment, or withdrawal management is preferred.
    • Demonstrated accuracy and attention to detail in medication handling, counts, and documentation
    • Sound judgment and a consistent willingness to escalate clinical concerns to nursing
    • Warm, compassionate and empathetic personality
    • Dignified character that models recovery principles
