About the role

The Radiologic Technologist Extern assists licensed technologists with diagnostic imaging procedures and patient care under direct supervision. They are responsible for preparing examination rooms, transporting patients, and maintaining equipment while adhering to radiation safety and privacy protocols.

Overview The Radiologic Technologist Extern is a student currently enrolled in an accredited Radiologic Technology program who works under the direct supervision of a licensed Radiologic Technologist. The extern assists with patient care, imaging department operations, and selected radiographic procedures consistent with educational preparation, organizational policy, and applicable regulatory requirements. This position provides hands-on clinical experience designed to enhance technical skills, professional development, and readiness for employment as a registered Radiologic Technologist.

Responsibilities

Assist licensed technologists with routine diagnostic imaging procedures. Prepare examination rooms, equipment, and supplies for imaging procedures. Escort, transport, and assist patients before, during, and after imaging exams. Verify patient identity using approved patient identification processes. Assist with patient positioning under direct supervision. Practice radiation safety principles, including ALARA, shielding, and proper collimation techniques. Assist with operation of radiographic equipment as permitted by educational level and state regulations. Maintain patient privacy and confidentiality in accordance with HIPAA requirements. Enter and review information in RIS, PACS, and electronic medical record systems as assigned. Perform department quality assurance activities and equipment checks under supervision. Stock supplies and maintain cleanliness of imaging rooms and work areas. Demonstrate professionalism and effective communication with patients, physicians, nurses, and departmental staff. Attend required educational programs, departmental meetings, and competency assessments. Perform other duties as assigned within the scope of training and supervision. EXCLUSIONS: Student shall not perform fluoroscopy, bedside portable imaging, or operating room procedures

Qualifications

  • Education
  • Kentucky Temporary Student Radiography License
  • Current CPR/BLS certification required.
  • Currently enrolled in an accredited Radiologic Technology Program with 50% completion in good academic standing
  • Eligibility to sit for the ARRT examination upon completion of the educational program preferred.
  • Successful completion of foundational radiography coursework and clinical requirements as defined by the educational program.
  • Good academic standing throughout employment. Minimum Work Experience
  • Minimum 1 year of healthcare related experience preferred. Required Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities
  • Basic knowledge of radiographic anatomy, positioning, and imaging principles.
  • Understanding of radiation protection and patient safety practices.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to follow instructions and work effectively under supervision.
  • Basic computer proficiency and ability to learn RIS, PACS, and EMR systems.
  • Ability to maintain patient confidentiality and professionalism.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.

Requirements

Candidates must be currently enrolled in an accredited Radiologic Technology program with at least 50% completion and hold a Kentucky Temporary Student Radiography License. A current CPR/BLS certification is required, along with foundational knowledge of radiographic anatomy and safety practices.
