About the role

The Nurse Practitioner functions as an Advanced Practice Practitioner accountable for a defined patient population, serving in roles such as expert practitioner, consultant, educator, patient advocate, care coordinator, and researcher within a specialized area of practice. Patient care is provided utilizing the medical model under the supervision of a Neonatologist, adhering to standardized procedures and scope of licensure.

About Us

The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at Valley Children’s Hospital is Central California’s only Regional Level IV NICU - the highest level of medical care available for premature and critically ill newborns.

With a focus on family-centered care, our patients have access to a full range of pediatric and surgical specialists that treat potentially life-threatening illnesses due to extreme prematurity, congenital defects, injury, chronic illnesses and more.

Our NICU patient ratios are 1:1 or 2:1 in the ICU and 1:3 in Intermediate Care.

Collectively, our NICUs provide specialized care for more than 1,400 fragile babies and nearly 25,000 patient days a year.

Our team supports a network of NICUs throughout Central California, providing services for Madera County, Merced County, Fresno County, Kings County and Tulare County.

Our level II and level III satellite NICUs (Fresno, Merced & Hanford) are staffed with Valley Children’s team of experts to provide patients the opportunity to receive treatment closer to home.

The nurses in these satellite units are trained to attend high-risk deliveries and resuscitate babies in the delivery room if needed.

Our NICU is ranked as one of the best children’s hospitals in Neonatology by U.S.

News & World Report for 2023-2024- the seventh such ranking for our NICU.

Our expert team consists of more than 250 neonatal nurses, constantly striving to innovate and improve patient care so babies have the best outcomes.

Job Summary

The Nurse Practitioner is an Advanced Practice Practitioner who is accountable for a "defined" patient population. Functions in the roles of expert practitioner, consultant, educator, patient advocate, care coordinator and researcher within a specialized area of practice. Possesses and exhibits a high degree of knowledge, skill and competence in the provision of health care directly to the patient, family or community, or indirectly through guidance of care by other professional personnel. Provision of patient care is conducted and performed utilizing the medical model under the supervision of the CCS paneled Neonatologist and functions in accordance to standardized procedures within the scope of licensure and in accordance with applicable law, regulations, and in accordance with policies of Valley Children's Healthcare.

  • Program Graduate of a Neonatal Nurse Practitioner program (required)
  • Licenses and Certifications
  • BLS - Basic Life Support within 30 days of hire or transfer into position (required)
  • RN - Reg Nurse (required)
  • NP - Nurse Practitioner (required)
  • NRP - Neonatal Resuscitation Program (required)
  • NP-C - Nurse Practitioner Natl Certification National certification from an accredited certifying board. within six (6) months of hire or transfer into position (required) Or
  • NCC - Neonatal Intensive Care Nurse (required)
  • Work Experience
  • Minimum three (3) years Related experience (required)
  • Minimum five (5) years Increasingly responsible experience which demonstrates professional working knowledge of nursing theory and practice, with competence in physical assessment, differential diagnosis, pathophysiology, pharmacology and management of acute and chronic pediatric problems. (preferred)
  • Skills and Abilities

  • Other Must successfully complete the credentialing process through the Medical Staff office via CIDP for the appropriate scope of practice, written standardized protocols, and furnishing privileges.

Requirements

Candidates must possess a Master's Degree in Nursing and be a graduate of a Neonatal Nurse Practitioner program, requiring RN, NP, BLS, and NRP certifications upon hire or shortly thereafter. A minimum of three years of related experience is required, with five years of increasingly responsible experience demonstrating competence in physical assessment, diagnosis, and management of pediatric problems preferred.
