The Optometrist provides advanced optometric services, including comprehensive eye examinations, vision analysis, refraction, tonometry, and detailed ocular structure studies using advanced instrumentation. Major duties also involve substantial administrative responsibility, such as planning and developing the optometry program, managing expenditures, maintaining records, and performing staff evaluations.
Applicants must hold a Doctor of Optometry (OD) degree from an accredited school and possess a current, unrestricted California Optometry license, along with DEA registration eligibility and current CPR (BLS Provider) certification. Preferred qualifications include a post-graduate optometric residency, and the candidate must demonstrate experience in advanced procedures and cultural sensitivity towards the Indian community.
The Optometrist duties include performing several or all of the following kinds of professional work: Comprehensive eye examination, which includes vision analysis and assessment of the anterior and posterior segment. Acuity of vision (determines how well patient sees form, light and color at various distances). Retinoscopy (gives an objective finding of the amount of lens correction needed). Refraction (measured refractive error of the eyes, relates objective and subjective tests). Tonometry (correctly measures intraocular pressure for the detection of glaucoma. When glaucoma is detected, the patient is properly managed.) Phorometry (measures extraocular muscle balance, coordination, and fusion which relates to binocular performance). Slit lamp biomicroscopy with and without the use of a 78 or 90D lens (detailed study of the cornea, iris, lens, anterior chamber) and recognize any change that may occur as a result of disease, injury, or cornea-contact lens relationship. Direct and Indirect Ophthalmoscopy (detects evidence of disease and injuries in the eye, and ocular manifestations of bodily disease, which may require referral of patients for medical care. Perimetry (measures, analyzes and interprets visual fields correctly and consistently, which may require referral of patients for medical care). Subnormal vision care and rehabilitation. In addition, the Optometrist’s assignments will include substantial administrative responsibility for: In coordination with the Eye Care Director, planning, developing, and adjusting the various elements of the optometry program and managing the expenditure of allotted funds. Maintaining liaison with, and providing advisory services to, personnel of the professional disciplines on patient or program problems of overlapping or mutual interest. Maintaining proper records and making necessary reports, and working through the Department Director towards maintaining a readiness with our accreditation organization and constant improvements in our Quality Management program. Performing the annual employee evaluations to assigned staff. As assigned, follow through on patient complaint concerns in coordination of the Quality Management policies. The Optometrist must understand the Program Personnel Policies regarding leave (training, sick and annual), time sheets and must complete tasks by the due date. Use the IHS guidelines regarding eligible patients. Be willing to serve as an authoritative source of information for the conduct of optometric practice in any phase of the optometry program. This position requires working weekends and evenings as needed. Other duties as assigned relevant to the position, with relevant training and competency assessment documented within the level of their licensing or certification. Optometrists may consult with physicians, ophthalmologists, and other medical specialists concerning problems likely to arise during the care of patients with ocular pathology or ocular manifestations of systematic disease.
