About the role

This role involves extensive data processing, including order entry, result retrieval, and managing laboratory logs, alongside ensuring high user satisfaction for internal and external service users. Key duties also include specimen processing, preparation for shipment, inventory checks, and maintaining clean, sanitary work environments.

1.

Must be courteous to patients, visitors, physicians, volunteers, and other employees of the organization.

2.

Ensures the satisfaction of all users of the department's services, both internal and external.

This includes developing monitoring programs and continually seeking ways to improve user (i.e. customer) satisfaction.

3.

Performs data processing functions to include; non-patient admissions, order entry, cancellation, result entry and retrieval and log review.

4.

Operates computer system in all assigned functions including maintenance, troubleshooting and implementation of backup systems.

5.

Answers the phone, relays messages, provides prompt and accurate information to requesting parties concerning testing procedures and results.

6.

Communicates all relevant information to technical staff regarding specimens including adequacy, test add-on and cancellations and test priority.

7.

Delivers or mail reports and picks-up requisitions and specimens within the hospital.

8.

Verifies incoming specimens with courier, checks specimens for acceptability and special handling needs ad distributes to sections.

9.

Prepares specimens for shipment to intra-system sites, reference labs and other institutions; compiles necessary support documentation, makes necessary arrangements for transportation.

10.

Coordinates reporting and filing reference lab reports.

11.

Checks inventory, orders stock-items and stores upon arrival.

12.

Maintains confidentiality of information deemed confidential.

13.

Maintains harmonious and cooperative relations with fellow employees, medical staff, patients and guests and serves effectively as part of the Laboratory team in performing professional service to patients.

14.

Maintains workbenches, testing areas and other work areas in clean, sanitary and free of clutter condition for the safety of patients, guest and staff.

15.

Maintains a thorough knowledge of departmental and Hospital policies and procedures as they pertain to the job, including the fire and disaster plans.

16.

Collects data for QA and other projects.

17.

Responsible for pre-analytic specimen processing, i.e. aliquoting, labeling, numbering, operation centrifuge, creating work cards, prioritizing specimens.

18.

Inoculates and processes culture specimens and prepares for transportation.

19.

Obtains appropriate blood specimens from patients of all ages as assigned.

20.

Performs glassware cleaning duties and general cleaning (not performed by Environmental Services) as assigned.

21.

Performs other work related duties and activities as assigned or requested.

22.

Must wear facility provided identification badge.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE · Ability to read, write, understand and follow written instruction; · Typing at least 30 wpm; · Completion of Medical Terminology I or successfully pass FH’s Medical Terminology test with a score of 80%25 or better and one year work experience as a Clinical Associate, Unit clerk, Diagnostic Tech, PST, FH Lab assistant, PSA, PCT, HUC, CNA, Medical secretary and other positions that require Lab test ordering or phlebotomy. · Data systems knowledge and demonstration of effective interpersonal communication skills.

Requirements

Candidates must be able to follow written instructions, type at least 30 words per minute, and possess knowledge of Medical Terminology or pass an internal test with 80% or better. A minimum of one year of relevant work experience in roles like Clinical Associate, Unit Clerk, or Phlebotomy Technician is required, along with demonstrated data systems knowledge and effective communication skills.
