The Histology Technician is responsible for preparing and staining tissue specimens for microscopic examination and diagnosis by a Pathologist, performing high complexity and non-routine histology procedures requiring independent technical assessment. This role also involves leading the optimization and validation of new laboratory equipment and participating in student training through lecturing and directing clinical work.
Required qualifications include a High School Diploma/GED with specific biology/chemistry coursework or grandfathered certification, successful completion of a NAACLS accredited HT or HTL program, and at least one year of laboratory experience. Candidates must also obtain or be eligible to test for HT(ASCP) or HTL(ASCP) certification within one year of hire.
Responsible for preparing and staining tissue specimens for microscopic examination and diagnosis by a Pathologist. In doing so, performs high complexity and/or non-routine histology procedures requiring independent technical assessment of assay performance. Position is responsible for technical operation of specialized histological assays including training, education and continued quality improvement of the high complexity procedures. Position will lead and direct the optimization and validation of new laboratory equipment in accordance with applicable regulatory accrediting agencies. Position will assist with the technical oversight and directing of routine histology procedures in order to ensure high quality, diagnostic throughput. Additionally, positon will be required to participate in the onsite NACCLS accredited School of Histology by ways of lecturing, providing educational resources or directing student clinical training. Position requires attention to detail, technical expertise of the chemical rationale of the assays performed and the analytic skills required to remedy any technical difficulties encountered with high complexity histology assays. Transcripts will be requested prior to phone screenings to verify that required credit hours are met.
Education: HS/GED with a combination of 12 semester hours (18 quarter hours) of both biology and chemistry or grandfathered HT certification prior to 2005. Successful completion of a NAACLS accredited HT or HTL program or grandfathered HT certification prior to 2005.
Education: Bachelor Degree Experience: 1 year full-time experience as a certified HT or HTL in a Histology Laboratory. Other skills/knowledge: Technical expertise necessary in order to interpret tests, recognize abnormal test results, validate and optimize new testing platforms, synthesize complex technical procedures and troubleshoot technical or equipment issues. Analytical skills necessary to interpret and determine appropriate specimen preparation method, and to evaluate suitability of slides and stains produced. Ability to work on several projects at one time with good organizational skills, judgment and technical skills. Interpersonal skills sufficient to interact effectively and communicate with patients and other health care professionals.
