The Medical Technologist performs accurate laboratory testing, recognizes abnormal results, and ensures timely and accurate reporting to appropriate personnel. Responsibilities also include performing and recording instrument checks, quality control, routine maintenance, and initiating corrective action for QC issues.
Candidates must possess a baccalaureate degree from an accredited institution with relevant coursework, or an associate degree with specific credit hours, and must successfully complete a NAACLS accredited program or equivalent military training. Required certification includes MT/MLS (ASCP) or (AMT), or MLT (ASCP) or (AMT) depending on the educational path.
Skills: Knowledge and ability to perform testing with accuracy appropriate to the sections in which they work. Knowledge of standardization and quality control theory and ability to troubleshoot without preset criteria. Understanding of safety regulations, regulatory requirements, and statistical methods. Ability to communicate effectively with patients, hospital personnel and physicians.
