The Medical Technologist performs accurate laboratory testing, recognizes abnormal results, and ensures timely and accurate reporting to appropriate personnel. Responsibilities also include performing instrument checks, quality control, routine maintenance, and proper sample preparation and handling.
Candidates must possess either a baccalaureate degree with completion of a NAACLS accredited program or an associate degree in Medical Laboratory Science or related science with specific credit hours, along with required certification (MT/MLS (ASCP/AMT) or MLT (ASCP/AMT)). Students nearing graduation from accredited programs are also considered.
Skills: Knowledge and ability to perform testing with accuracy appropriate to the sections in which they work. Knowledge of standardization and quality control theory and ability to troubleshoot without preset criteria. Understanding of safety regulations, regulatory requirements, and statistical methods. Ability to communicate effectively with patients, hospital personnel and physicians.
