The Peer Specialist provides direct mental health services to persistently mentally ill recipients in a residential setting, acting as a role model and teaching self-help techniques and coping strategies. Responsibilities include assisting recipients in developing personalized coping skills, identifying relapse warning signs, creating crisis plans, and teaching daily living skills relevant to rehabilitation goals.
Candidates must demonstrate strong interpersonal communication skills and the ability to empathize with mental health service recipients, requiring two years of active participation in mental health self-help or peer support programs. A valid Driver's License is required, along with proficiency in Word and Excel, and availability for afternoon, evening, and weekend hours, including travel throughout The Bronx and Manhattan.

Serves as a role model for recipients and educates them on self-help techniques and self-help group process; teaches them effective coping strategies, sometimes based on personal experience; assists them in clarifying their goals for rehabilitation and recovery; and helps them to develop community, family and peer support systems.
