Core duties involve processing medication orders, compounding sterile intravenous preparations following USP 797 guidelines, and managing medication dispensing systems like McKesson robot and Cerner. Technicians also run reports, troubleshoot dispensing issues, and train nurses on dispensing problems.
Candidates must possess a full pharmacy technician license through the state of Michigan and a High School Diploma or GED. Required competencies include passing an annual Aseptic Technique exam, strong computer and math skills, good organization, and the ability to work effectively under pressure.
The Pharmacy Technician is an entry-level position. Following a training period, the Technician should be able to decipher and enter orders on the computer, compound IVs, charge and credit, fill orders, answer phones and doors, and stock the department.
(20%) Runs reports, pulls medications and restocks Automated Dispensing Machines, follows up on narcotic discrepancies, trouble-shoots problems, aides and trains nurses on dispensing problems. (20%) Compounds IV and piggyback medications, using aseptic technique and universal precautions. Follows USP 797 guidelines. (15%) Run labels using the computer in an accurate and timely manner. (15%) Fills, reconciles and exchanges 24 hour UD medicine carts using McKesson robot and Cerner. (15%) Repackages non-unit dose medications correctly using PacMed and McKesson repackager. (15%) Replaces and fills floor stock: fills EMS boxes, crash cart trays, open heart meds and Omnicell Anesthesia carts and delivers to appropriate area; completes monthly floor stock on other hospital departments; stocks UD area and IV room if needed.
Certifications and Licensures
Effective October 1, 2015, all incumbents, new hires and transfers to this position must possess a pharmacy technician full license through the state of Michigan. The pharmacy technician license must be maintained in order to be qualified to hold this position.
