About the role

The General Dentist will diagnose and treat dental diseases while educating patients on improving their oral hygiene regimens. Clinical duties include performing procedures such as prophylaxis, restorations, extractions, and administering preventive treatments like sealants and fluoride applications.

Shenandoah Community Health (SCH), a Federally Qualified Health Center and Primary Care Medical Home, is seeking a Dentist to help expand our growing dental practice and join our integrated Dental team in the beautiful Shenandoah Valley. This opportunity offers patient-centered, community-based dental care in a supportive setting with a four- or five-day workweek, no weekends, where you can make a lasting impact on oral health, overall wellness, and access to care for patients of all ages.

At SCH, Dentists provide comprehensive, relationship-centered oral health care in a mission-driven FQHC setting. This role includes diagnosing and treating dental disease, providing preventive and restorative services, educating patients on oral hygiene and healthy habits, and working collaboratively with the dental team to help patients achieve the best possible oral health outcomes.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Doctor of Dental Surgery or Doctor of Dental Medicine degree (DDS or DMD)
  • Active West Virginia dental license, or eligibility to obtain
  • WV DEA registration, or ability to obtain and maintain
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification
  • Comprehensive knowledge of dental procedures, instruments, diagnostics, and oral health treatment planning
  • Strong computer skills and experience with healthcare databases and applications
  • Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills, with the ability to demonstrate empathy, respect, specificity, and genuineness in all interactions

Responsibilities

  • Treat all patients with respect, dignity, and empathy
  • Diagnose and treat dental disease and educate patients to support improved oral hygiene and long-term oral health
  • Perform clinical duties within the scope of dental licensure, including prophylaxis, occlusion correction, stainless steel crowns, sealants, restorations, extractions, intraoral and extraoral exams, hard and soft tissue exams, and cancer screenings
  • Apply preventive treatments such as sealants, silver diamine fluoride (SDF), and topical fluoride to protect teeth from decay
  • Educate patients on brushing, flossing, nutrition, tobacco cessation, and other oral health strategies using patient-centered communication and motivational interviewing
  • Prescribe appropriate medications for dental conditions, including prescription toothpaste, antibiotics for infections, and analgesics for pain management
  • Administer nitrous oxide and/or anesthetic prior to treatment, as appropriate
  • Order radiographs and diagnose oral pathology from radiographic images
  • Maintain accurate clinical notes, treatment plans, and records related to patients’ oral health
  • Work collaboratively with the dental team and broader care team to provide high-quality care for pediatric and adult patients

Requirements

Candidates must hold a Doctor of Dental Surgery or Dental Medicine (DDS or DMD) and possess a valid West Virginia State license, including maintaining a WV DEA and current BLS certification.
