About the role

The psychiatrist is primarily responsible for the psychiatric evaluation of assigned patients and may provide individual, group, or family therapy, psychopharmacology, and consultation. They will collaborate with a multidisciplinary treatment team to develop and review treatment plans.

Shenandoah Community Health (SCH) is recruiting a General Psychiatrist for a full-time outpatient position to serve our growing Behavioral Health Services Team. The psychiatrist position is part of a collaborative team of providers including social workers, nurses, psychologists, professional counselors, recovery coaches and support staff, serving patients in Jefferson, Berkeley, Morgan County, WV and Winchester, VA. Services are provided primarily in office with some telehealth available.

This position is primarily responsible for the psychiatric evaluation of assigned patients in the clinical program. Services may include individual, group or family therapy, psychopharmacology and consultation, in collaboration with the treatment team.

The candidate must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skill necessary to provide care based on physical, psycho/social, educational, safety, and related criteria, appropriate to the age of the patients served in his/her assigned area. The skills and knowledge needed to provide such may be gained through education, training and experience.

Essential functions

Demonstrates the knowledge and ability to

Provide crises intervention as needed,

Provide individual therapy, and refer to other appropriate clinicians for group or family therapy, based on the inter-disciplinary treatment plan,

Demonstrate the knowledge and ability to provide substance abuse evaluation,

Assess the need for hospitalization, residential or outpatient treatment,

Interact and communicate with patients and staff in an age appropriate, cultural sensitive, non-threatening, productive manner,

Refer to appropriate staff or case management services to include social services SVS, CPS, and Domestic Violence Program,

Ensure and complete all documentation of contacts, care of patients, and response to treatment in the medical records,

Demonstrate the ability to conduct an assessment of patient abuse or neglect and implements appropriate interventions,

Participate as necessary in developing effective initial treatment plans and treatment plan reviews in the multi-disciplinary treatment planning meeting. Sign ITP as team psychiatrist,

Actively participates in treatment planning meeting for patients in his/her caseload in accordance with BHS policies and confers with staff and consulting physicians or agencies as necessary.

Required Skills

  • Ability to demonstrate courteous and cooperative behavior with patients, families, co-workers, subordinates, supervisors, and other department staff.
  • Ability to maintain patient confidentiality and privacy at all times according to policies and procedures; uses discretion when discussing patient matters.
  • Solid communication skills, including listening and the ability to demonstrate empathy, rapport building, and patience.
  • Ability to provide crises intervention as needed.

Experience and Education

  • Must be a M.D. or D.O.
  • Must be board certified or obtain certification within 5 years of residency.
  • Must be licensed or eligible for license in the state of West Virginia.
  • Must have excellent communication skills and basic computer skills.
  • Must maintain licensure and comply with continuing education requirements stipulated by applicable credentialing boards.
  • Must have and maintain current DEA
  • BLS certification
