The Medical Technologist performs accurate laboratory testing, recognizes abnormal results, and ensures timely and accurate reporting to appropriate personnel. Responsibilities also include performing and recording instrument checks, quality control, routine maintenance, and proper sample handling.
Candidates need a baccalaureate degree from an accredited institution with relevant science coursework, or an associate degree in Medical Laboratory Science, along with required national certification (MT/MLS (ASCP) or AMT, or MLT (ASCP) or AMT). Students nearing graduation from NAACLS accredited programs may also be considered.
Skills: Knowledge and ability to perform testing with accuracy appropriate to the sections in which they work. Knowledge of standardization and quality control theory and ability to troubleshoot without preset criteria. Understanding of safety regulations, regulatory requirements, and statistical methods. Ability to communicate effectively with patients, hospital personnel and physicians.
