The Lab Support Technician is responsible for registering, ordering, and processing laboratory specimens while ensuring compliance with hospital and regulatory standards. They also perform phlebotomy, maintain specimen integrity, and provide guidance on lab processes to students and staff.
A high school diploma or equivalent is required for this role. While no prior experience is necessary, training or coursework in medical assisting, phlebotomy, biology, or chemistry is preferred.
Register, order, and accession specimens using lab and hospital systems; verify patient information and ensure test accuracy and compliance with coding and Medicare policies Perform phlebotomy and specimen handling, including labeling, centrifuging, aliquoting, organizing, storing, and preparing for transport per DOT and IATA regulations Evaluate specimen integrity and appropriateness; resolve issues and cancel or adjust orders as needed Provide guidance on specimen collection, lab processes, and results; monitor orders to ensure timely collection Train, mentor, and evaluate students and new staff
Education: High school graduate or equivalent required. Training as a unit clerk, medical assistant, medical secretary, or phlebotomist is preferred. Coursework in biology and/or chemistry is considered. Previous employment in a medical setting, in computer operations, and/or with telephone demands is preferred.
