The Ultrasound Technologist performs specialized diagnostic ultrasound procedures to detect anatomical abnormalities in a maternal-fetal medicine setting. They are responsible for patient preparation, equipment maintenance, and accurate documentation of clinical data within the electronic health record system.
Candidates must be graduates of an approved ultrasound school and hold ARDMS or ARRT certification. A minimum of two years of clinical experience in a maternal-fetal medicine practice is preferred.
A day in the life of an Ultrasound Technologis at Hackensack Meridian Health includes: Performs procedures according to departmental format, completing exam in allotted time. Performs required daily clerical duties, which include the use of EPIC, computer systems, patient scheduling, and other computer systems. Performs portable ultrasound exams. Performs a variety of complex technical tasks in Diagnostic Ultrasound utilizing high frequency sound waves to detect anatomical abnormalities in accordance with prescribed sonographic procedures. Determines, prepares, and sets up medical supplies, instruments, and equipment. Prepares patients for diagnostic procedures, explains procedures, measures and positions patients for each anatomical view. Evaluates technical quality of images. Maintains records of ultrasound taken, archiving, and de-archiving data as required. Calculates, compiles, and records data from numerical readings on patient`s charts and related documents. Cleans and sterilizes instruments, supplies, and equipment. Stocks and replenishes supplies as required. Provides technical assistance and instruction to students, employees, and medical residents. Identifies the needs of the patient population served and modifies and delivers care that is specific to those needs (i.e., age, culture, language, hearing and /or visually impaired, etc.). This process includes communicating with the patient, parent, and/or primary caregiver(s) at their level (developmental/age, educational, literacy, etc.). Other duties and/or projects as assigned. Qualifications: Education,
Required: High School diploma, general equivalency diploma (GED), and/or GED equivalent programs. Graduate of an approved Ultrasound School. Knowledge of all ultrasound equipment, their function, and operation of each control. Understanding of equipment and computer systems as well as the procedures for equipment service. Knowledge of safety, infection, and disaster policy and procedures, including implementation of patient care in cases of an emergency situation. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Preferred: Minimum of two (2) years of clinical experience at a Maternal Fetal Medicine practice. Licenses and Certifications Required: ARDMS Certification or American Registry of Radiologic Technologists Certification. Nuchal Translucency Certification within 90 days of entering position. BLS AHA Basic Health Care Life Support HCP Certification. Licenses and Certifications Preferred: Fetal Echocardiography Certification.
