About the role

The Nuclear Medicine Technologist operates specialized equipment to produce quality diagnostic images and administers radiopharmaceuticals to patients. They are also responsible for maintaining radiation safety standards, performing quality control, and managing department records.

Position Summary

Under the supervision of the Radiology Director/Manager and/or Lead Technologist the Nuclear Medicine Technologist will perform all Nuclear Medicine duties as well as other related duties as needed to facilitate workflow and promote health care. The Nuclear Medicine Technologists will operate Nuclear Medicine equipment in a safe and competent manner to produce quality diagnostic images as directed by physicians according to established standards and protocols.ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:Orders and maintains Nuclear Medicine supplies and radiopharmaceuticals. Prepares radiopharmaceuticals and administers to patients appropriately.Reviews requisitions for completeness and pertinence. Schedules and performs Nuclear Medicine scans as ordered by the requesting physician(s). Confidentiality is maintained at all times.Performs ongoing preventative maintenance and radiation surveys. Performs quality control procedures as outlined by the manufacturer. Documents and maintains records appropriately. Takes corrective action to remedy problems identified.Maintains all records of receipt and disposal of radioactive materials as required by State and Federal regulations. Follows radiation safety guidelines and uses appropriate safety equipment and techniques. Follows Standard PrecautionsAssists the Radiology Director/Manager in developing the department?s quality improvement program and reporting methods. Wears radiation-monitoring devices, such as film badges and TLD rings in an appropriate manner as outlined in the Radiation Safety Manual. Submits badges and/or rings on a monthly basis. Provides education on proper radiation badge placement on appropriate staff and demonstrates radiation principles to staff as needed.Participates in Radiation Safety Committees and acts as assistant to Radiation Safety Officer as requested. Maintains radiation badge documentations for Radiology and Surgical departments. Participates in other hospital committees as requested.Maintains and demonstrates professional skills through self-development and continuing education.Functions within guidelines and has knowledge of regulatory, licensing, and accrediting bodies; i.e., Title 17, Title 22, Conditions of Participation, DNV, etc.Promotes positive patient relations in a caring environment by making patients comfortable and at ease during proceduresTransfers and positions patients using extreme care, patience and proper body mechanics.Identifies patients using the hospital's double identification policy.Responds to backup calls as needed within 30 minutes.OTHER RESPONSIBILITIES:Ability to communicate effectively with patients, physicians, and hospital staff members.Independent thinking to exercise good judgment in determining actions in emergencies.Other duties as assigned from time to time by the lead technologist, radiology manager, and or director.Adhere to the behavioral standards and other policies set forth by the district.Completion of all educational and other related requirements annually by the district.Upkeep of all related professional licenses including BLS.SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:NoneEDUCATION, KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND EXPERIENCE:Formal AMA-approved educational program with certification.Good interpersonal skills and ability to work with patients, visitors, and staffAble to follow department?s procedures and operate complex computerized equipmentAbility to work with minimal or no supervision and take rotating calls on evening and weekends.LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS:Certified as a nuclear medicine technologist by the State of California as required.Venipuncture certificate (California)Current CPR certification required.

Requirements

Candidates must have completed an AMA-approved educational program and hold a valid Nuclear Medicine Technologist certification from the State of California. Additionally, a California venipuncture certificate and current CPR/BLS certification are required.
