Frequently asked questions

Pre-tax deductions come out of gross pay first. Federal income tax is then worked out on what remains, after the standard deduction for your filing status. Social Security and Medicare are calculated on a slightly different base, and state income tax on another. What is left after all of them is your take-home pay.

FICA is Social Security and Medicare together. Social Security stops at an annual wage base, so high earners stop paying it partway through the year. Medicare has no cap at all, and an additional Medicare surcharge applies above $200,000. That is why the effective rate on a very high salary falls rather than rising as the year goes on.

It changes the standard deduction and the income at which each tax bracket starts, and for some states it changes the exemption or credit as well. Filing jointly generally lowers tax on a single income and can raise it where two similar incomes are combined.

Allowances were removed from the W-4 in 2020. Withholding is now based on filing status, other income, deductions and any extra amount you ask for. This calculator estimates your annual tax and divides it across your pay periods rather than reproducing the withholding tables, so the two can differ slightly from your actual payslip.

Local and municipal income taxes other than New York City, itemised deductions, tax credits, multi-state work, self-employment income and supplemental wages such as bonuses. It is an estimate rather than tax advice.

How accurate is this?

It uses the 2026 federal and state tax tables and standard deductions, so it lands close for a straightforward salaried situation. It covers the federal child tax credit but not other credits, and it does not model local or municipal income tax, itemised deductions, multi-state work or supplemental wages such as bonuses. It is an estimate rather than tax advice.
