The vascular sonographer performs non-invasive laboratory diagnostic tests to assess venous and arterial disease in an academic hospital setting. They are also responsible for documenting findings, maintaining laboratory standards, and assisting in the training of students and fellows.
Candidates must hold a Registered Vascular Technologist (RVT) certification or be eligible within one year of employment. A minimum of 12 months of full-time clinical vascular testing experience is required.
Performing the following tests while adhering to the Vascular Lab’s published protocols and maintaining standards set forth by the Intersocietal Accreditation Commission for Vascular Testing (IAC) to include Peripheral Arterial Testing, Peripheral Venous Testing, Extracranial Cerebrovascular Testing, Visceral Vascular Testing, and Additional Exams Performing ultrasound examinations and completing reports in a timely fashion to keep up with an outpatient and inpatient schedule Having sufficient knowledge of the indications, performance, and reliability of these tests to be able to advise physicians as to the appropriateness of requested testing for the patient’s clinical problem under evaluation. Recognizing normal and abnormal sonographic findings of blood flow and soft tissue. Appropriately optimizing ultrasound images in grayscale and adjusting color and spectral Doppler characteristics to ensure diagnostic findings. Formulating a preliminary interpretation of the test data and documenting that interpretation in the patient’s medical record in Epic in a timely, concise, and accurate manner. Promptly relaying critical findings to ordering providers and appropriately documenting into the patient’s medical record in Epic. Verifying appropriate diagnosis codes for tests performed in Epic to ensure indications support the ordered exam. Maintaining the laboratory in good working conditions and maintaining adequate levels of laboratory supplies. Assisting with the correlation of all Vascular Lab examinations with the gold standard and with the accreditation process (IAC) of the lab. Helping with the education of patients, employees, vascular fellows, medical and surgical house staff, and students in the basics of ultrasound and anatomy and physiology. Being an active participant with the ultrasound students and vascular fellow’s training, education, and scanning opportunities in the Vascular Lab during their rotation. Being an integral part of the organization, planning, and distribution of the Vascular Lab operational schedule working with the Lead Sonographer and Technical Director. Working with the Technical Director and non-invasive vascular lab staff in the continual development and implementation of changing policies and procedures dictated by the IAC Vascular board. Performing the “day-to-day” operations of the vascular lab when the Technical Director is not present. Although the primary purpose of the vascular laboratory is to provide a clinical diagnostic service to the Johns Hopkins patient population, the aforementioned equipment may at times be utilized in clinical research projects. Therefore, the vascular sonographer may at times perform tests for this purpose and participate in clinical research.
Requires certification as a Registered Vascular Technologist (RVT) from the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers or must be RVT eligible within the first year of employment. If not currently an RVT, graduation from an accredited sonography school is require A minimum of 12 months of full time clinical vascular testing experience with the performance of no less than 600 noninvasive vascular examinations required. Requires the ability to assist patients on and off examination table and position patients for studies. Requires periodic lifting, pushing, positioning and moving of large ultrasound equipment to perform tests bedside. Additional education may substitute for required experience, and additional related experience may substitute for required education beyond a high school diploma/graduation equivalent, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.
