About the role

The Cytotechnologist is responsible for screening gynecological and non-gynecological slides to ensure high-quality results and accurate documentation. They also assist in quality assurance programs, equipment maintenance, and provide technical support to medical staff.

1. Ensures the satisfaction of all users of the department's services, both internal and external and seeks to continually improve customer service and satisfaction. 2. Screens an average minimum 60 slides/day prepared from both gynecological and non-gynecological sources and sign out results of the highest possible quality. 3. Responsible for documenting: The slide interpretation results of each case examined or reviewed, For each 24 hour period, the total number of slides examined or reviewed in all laboratories The number of hours spent examining slides in each 24 hour period. 4. Prepares monthly work statistics. 5. Serves as technical reference for physicians and other health care professionals. 6. Performs all facets of cyto-preparation and post-cyto preparation. 7. Assists in preparation of material obtained from fine needle aspirations. 8. Performs and documents troubleshooting and preventive maintenance on equipment. 9. Responsible to review and revise section manuals as assigned in compliance with CAP and NCCLS standards as necessary and at least annually. 10. Assists Anatomic Pathology Supervisor and pathologists in maintaining the Quality Assurance/Quality Control Program. Designs and implement Quality Assurance projects, collects data, summarizes results and makes recommendations. 11. Assists in retrospective quality assurance reviews. 12. Participates in the preparation of cytology-histology problem case sets. 13. Practice efficient and economical use of laboratory supplies; checks the inventory, orders supplies and restocks upon arrival. 14. Maintains confidentiality of information deemed confidential. 15. Maintains harmonious and cooperative relations with fellow employees, medical staff, patients and guests and serves effectively as part of the Laboratory team in performing professional service to patients. 16. Maintains work benches, testing areas and other work areas in a clean, sanitary and free of clutter condition for the safety of patients, guests and staff. 17. Maintains professional growth and development through seminars workshops, and professional affiliations to keep abreast of latest trends in field of expertise. Documentation of the completion of at least 6.0 CEUS as approved by the ASCP and/or ASCT. 18. Teaches practical and theoretical principles of test procedures, presents in-services and assists in the preparation of in-service and continuing education programs. 19. Maintains a thorough knowledge of departmental and Hospital policies and procedures as they pertain to the job, including the fire and disaster plans. 20. Performs other work related duties and activities as assigned or requested. Consistently provides service excellence to all patients, family members, visitors, volunteers and co-workers in a manner that reflects Cape Cod Hospital’s commitment to CARES: compassion, accountability, respect, excellence and service.

Read, write and communicate in English.

An Associates or Bachelors Degree (copy of degree or transcript required) plus or including one (1) full year in an accredited School of Cytotechnology.

CT (ASCP) registered.

Employees with five years experience will be expected to perform QA/QC when asked.

Candidates must hold an Associate or Bachelor's degree plus one year in an accredited School of Cytotechnology. A valid CT (ASCP) registration is required.
