The medical assistant provides direct and indirect patient care under the supervision of healthcare providers in an ambulatory setting. Responsibilities include clinical tasks such as specimen collection and vital signs, as well as clerical duties like scheduling and chart management.
Candidates must have a high school diploma or equivalent and completion of an accredited medical assistant program or equivalent military training. A BLS certification is required prior to starting in the department.
A certified healthcare provider employed by Erlanger Health is responsible for direct and/or indirect care of patients under the direction of an RN, LPN, physician, nurse practitioner or physician assistant. The medical assistant assists in the delivery of health care for patients per their scope of practice, in the ambulatory areas of Erlanger.
This position is involved in a team-based approach to care. Team members are trained to meet the highest level of function for their role as per the State guidelines and are trained and assigned to manage the practices' patient population. Participates in the practice's quality improvement process and performance evaluation.
Education: Required: High School diploma/equivalent
Required: Completion of an accredited or governed program OR military equivalent training OR one year of clinical medical assistant experience within the last 5 years.
Preferred: Previous MA experience Phlebotomy skills
The employee must be able to: Demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served in physician practice.
Demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span.
Assess data reflective of the patient's status and interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each patient's requirements relative to his or her age-specific needs.
Provide the care needed as described in the unit's policies and procedures.
o Checking schedules and organizing patient flow o Accompanying patients to exam/procedure room o Assisting patients as needed with walking transfers, dressing, collecting specimens, preparing for exam, collecting patient history o Performing screenings per provider guideline o Assisting providers/nurses with various procedures, charting, relaying instructions to patients/families, answering calls and providing pertinent information.
o Sending/receiving patient medical records o Obtaining lab/x-ray reports, hospital notes, referral information, etc. o Completing forms/requisitions as needed o Scheduling appointments o Verifying insurance coverage and patient demographics o Managing and updating charts to ensure that information is complete and filed appropriately o Reviewing in basket messages
