About the role

The RNFA collaborates with surgeons to perform safe surgical procedures, including tissue handling, wound closure, and providing exposure. They also manage perioperative patient care, maintain aseptic environments, and ensure accurate clinical documentation.

Surgery RN RNFA - Per Diem*

*important note

In lieu of benefits due to "per diem" status, 15% will be added to the hourly rate. Per diem employees are offered work on an "as-needed" basis.

Position summary

Performs RNFA responsibilities in accordance with the Nurse Practice Act of the State of Nevada, institutional policies and procedures of this facility, and the AORN Position Statement on RN First Assistants. The RNFA practices in collaboration with the surgeon and the health care team in performing a safe operation with optimal outcomes for the patient. The RNFA does not concurrently function as the scrub nurse.

Position requirements

  • Minimum Education
  • Successful completion of an RNFA program that meets the AORN Recommended Education *Standards for RNFA Programs and the criteria for the CBPN Acceptance Program.
  • License Required
  • Current NV Nursing license.
  • Must maintain CNOR and RN Licensure with the required amount of Continuing Education.
  • Certification Required
  • Certified as a CNOR.
  • CRNFA certification preferred after meeting eligibility requirements for exam.
  • BLS and ACLS required.
  • Minimum Work Experience
  • Demonstrated proficiency in acute care nursing, knowledge, and skills.
  • Ability to communicate effectively.
  • 'Must show initiative, maturity, and effectiveness in dealing with people.
  • Appreciation of and desire to be part of a healthcare team.

Position essential functions

  • Knowledge
  • Practice within limitations of preparation and experience. Demonstrates knowledge of hospital policies and procedures for the following: 1. Intraoperative Tissue Handling. 2. Intraoperative Homeostasis. 3. Intraoperative Retracting. 4. Intraoperative Wound Closure.

RNFA

Perform RNFA responsibilities in accordance with the Nurse Practice Act of the State of Nevada, institutional policies and procedures of this facility, and the AORN Position Statement on RN First Assistants.

Demonstrate RNFA specific clinical skills. Intraoperative nursing behaviors may include: 1. handling tissue. 2. providing exposure. 3. using instruments. 4. suturing and tying. 5. providing hemostasis.

Function as an assistant in all surgical specialties at the direction of the attending surgeon.

May perform pre and post-operative patient education as designated.

Review chart for pertinent data.

Assist in maintaining a safe environment and promoting efficiency in surgical procedures.

Judgment

Demonstrates the skills and judgment necessary to implement medical plan of care, nursing interventions and procedures as necessary for the care of the patient.

Demonstrates knowledge of hospital policies and procedures for administering, transcribing, and recording medications.

Demonstrates knowledge of commonly used meds: action, dose, and side effects.

Observes 10 rights of medication administration: right med, right dose, right time, right route, right patient, right education, right documentation, right to refuse, right assessment, right evaluation. (policy 105.724).

Demonstrates proper procedures in all methods of medication administration.

Initiates and maintains IV access according to hospital policy and procedures.

Identifies priorities and executes nursing care accordingly.

Provides emotional support and comfort measures.

Gives information or explanation to patients and their families.

Applies and monitors principles of aseptic technique throughout the intraoperative period,

Acts as a scrub/circulating nurse during the intraoperative phase.

Assures safe transfer/transport of patient to and from operating room.

Performs sponge, needle, and instrument counts according to policy and procedure.

Ensures safety of patients during the use of electrical equipment.

Preps the surgical site using aseptic technique.

Correctly collects and accurately labels specimens.

Confines and contains sources of contaminations.

Revises physician’s preference cards and communicates changes to appropriate personnel.

Documentation

Maintains up to date accurate documentation of nursing care provided to assure the integration of information for use by the health care team, to ensure quality care.

Nursing assessment is complete and accurate during pre-operative and post-operative phase of admission per policy.

Medication administration record must reflect full documentation by nurse administering med, time given, reason for omission, and site for injection (if applicable).

Demonstrates proper access, documentation of narcotics in the Pyxis and EMR.

Accurately and promptly documents unusual occurrences noted during the perioperative phase.

Per Diem positions have no guaranteed hours or set schedule. 1 shift of availability per pay period.

Call

1 weeknight per month and 2 weekend days per month.
