The General Surgeon provides direct patient care, including performing surgeries and managing clinic responsibilities. Additional duties include communicating test results, providing discharge education, and participating in quality improvement meetings.
Candidates must hold a Doctor of Medicine or equivalent degree, be Board Certified or Eligible, and have completed an accredited residency. Valid US medical licensure and BLS/ACLS certifications are required.

Current, full, and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia. Board Certified or Board Eligible. Degree of Doctor of Medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. Completed residency training, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification. Basic Life Support (BLS), Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS). Previous experience with the VA is a plus.

What does a typical day look like for the General Surgeon? You will: Schedule: Monday through Friday, 7:30 am to 4:00 pm. On-call duties as required. Direct Patient Care: Estimated 99% of the time is involved in direct patient care. Clinic Responsibilities: Be present for any scheduled clinic/surgery start times as documented by physical presence in the clinic or Operating Room at the scheduled start time. Communication of Test Results: Mechanisms must be in place to notify patients receiving care in accordance with VHA Directive 1088, Communicating Test Results to Providers and Patients.
