The Phlebotomist is responsible for the timely and safe collection of blood specimens from inpatients. This includes proper identification of patients, adherence to safety protocols, and effective communication with nursing personnel.
Candidates should have completed a training program in phlebotomy or medical assisting, although experience can substitute for education. Prior phlebotomy experience is preferred.

Summary: Timely and safe blood collection for inpatients. Position Responsibilities Communicates at shift change and follows through on pending specimens. Determines specimen priority and takes action accordingly. Always wears proper PPE; practices strict hand hygiene and disposes of biohazardous waste and sharps in proper containers. Always identifies the patient correctly, verifying ID band information against the test request prior to collecting the specimen. Always follows posted instructions about arm restrictions. Draws Blood Bank specimens appropriately utilizing the Blood Bank ID band with 100% accuracy. Displays good venipuncture technique, rarely misses a vein on any patient. Collect specimens in appropriate containers paying strict attention to mixing and order of draw. Displays good technique for microcollection and blood cultures. Labels specimens correctly with all of the appropriate requisition information to include initials, time and date of collection immediately after collection in the presence of the patient. Communicates with nursing personnel on patient care issues. Always notifies nursing if patient refuses test or specimen was unable to be collected. Adheres to standards of performance and the SINAI way. Interacts with patients as trained, always requesting permission to enter (unless night shift), smiles, introduces self and explains procedure to patient. Always leaves bedside table, phone, call button within reach and discards trash into waste container. Always appears, dresses and conducts themselves in a professional manner. Responds to pages in a timely manner; beepers and cell phones are on vibrate during working hours. Prioritizes specimen collection and delivery to the lab. Receives specimens, accessions specimens, and delivers samples to the appropriate workstations in the laboratory. Accessions specimens with minimal errors. Resolves discrepancies with orders at the time of discovery. Answers the telephone or responds to the pneumatic tube alarm. Responds to stat specimen requests by either paging assigned staff or distributing requests. Responds to pages including Code Blue, RRT and Stroke Alerts. Qualifications License/Registration/Certification Completion of training program in phlebotomy or medical assisting preferred; experience can be substituted for education requirements.
